My kitty is fed the kitty crack.  He loves it and it really is not bad food.  The so-called "quality" food is not always the best for them.   For example, lots of people jumped on the "grain free" train,  only to find out is is not good for most pets, unless there is a reason they should not have grains.

I feed my boy pate formulas, particularly chicken and liver.  It's high in protein and low in carbs, which is good for them.  He is 14 and in good health, knock on wood.

It's like when people say they won't feed their pets anything with by-products in it.  Some by-products are good for therm.

I say let your girl eat what she enjoys.

Here is my advice Gonebutnotforgotten....as a cat mom for the past 52 years, currently being graced with the presence of SIX rescue cats in our home...give the 18 year old feline what she likes.  At her age, it is more important that she eats and stays hydrated.  Old cats are predisposed to kidney failure diabetes and hyperthyroidism.  I too buy the very expensive organic grain free... etc for my 6 guys, both wet and dry.  But they will always snub that for Fancy Feast, my partner equates that with fast food and chips in the cat world...my guys range from 13 to 4.  So I try to keep it healthier for them.  And they will eat the good food, eventually, when they realize nothing else is coming.  But if I had an 18 year old I would be happy with whatever they would eat.  Thank you for adopting her in her advanced age.  You are an amazing person.

@GoneButNotForgotten   My cat will not eat wet food at all; will not eat any treats.  She only likes her food which is Purina One Sensitive stomach dry and she also likes banana.  Of course, she is her ideal weight which I am very happy about.  One food I wanted to change to was Purina Pro Plan.  There are some choices that have shredded pieces of the meat inside the kibbles and for cat food it smells very good.  It comes in dry food and they also have wet food.  This is Purina's top of the line.  They even developed a cat food that reduces allergies and dander by 47% in the Pro Plan brand.

@GoneButNotForgotten

I didn't know you adopted an older kitty! Especially one whose own family gave up on her (makes me beyond mad anybody could do that). I've owned cats for the vast majority of my almost-65 years. Most of mine died of old age.

As for the food, I think she's old enough to decide for herself what she wants to eat. I feed my 7-year-old (who I just adopted back in January) Fancy Feast myself. He was eating Friskies dry food and Fancy Feast wet food at the shelter he was in.

My nephew, who has owned kitties the last 14 years, currently has two. His last cat died from stomach cancer and he and his wife's cat died from old age, both early this year. Because of that, he's been feeding his kitties the expensive stuff. I'm good with the Friskies and Fancy Feast and so is my Tommy.

@GoneButNotForgotten  First, thank you for adopting and loving a senior.  They are the best.  As far as Fancy Feast, my cats love it and they are very particular.  Both are rescues, with one just showing up one day and never left.  They are both in excellent health with one being about 13 or 14 and the other about 9 or 10.  In your case, FF is what your cat likes, so keep feeding it to her.  The nice thing about FF is that they have every type of food combination for even the fussiest of cats.

I have fed Fancy Feast to all my cats. It said Complete and Balanced Nutrition on the label, so cat was getting what it needed nutritionally. and UNlike many of the "premium quality" brands, Fancy Feast cat food was NOT recallled  in the Melamine disaster of 2007.  I may be wrong but I don't think they've EVER had a recall.

She's 18 years old. Make her happy.  Feed Her What She Wants.

I have an elderly kitty who has several teeth missing and she has kidney disease. Every so often she goes on a I refuse to eat diet. When she does this we have to be blend up a mixture of various food and force her with an eye dropper to eat it. After a few days of this she gradually regains her appetite. I let her have anything she will eat. Just as long as she eats.  She's only about 7 pounds so I try to get all the calories I can in her before she has another bout of non eating.

I would give the cat what she likes. The important thing is that she's eating. I've fed my cats mostly Purina and Nine Lives (both canned and dry), and they have done well.

I've had cats my entire life, and one thing I've learned is they'll eat what they want, when they want.  I've tried every food (dry/canned/frozen) known to man.  Some eat it, some don't.  Right now for dry, they're eating Science Diet Perfect Digestion dry food (along with various types of canned) and all seem to like it.  Go figure.

Thank you for taking in a senior kitty!!! Bravo 👏

My kitties eat Friskies Kitten Chow dry food & Friskies Beef & Chicken wet food. I have 2 soon to be 17 year olds I've had since they were 2-3 days old, so I must be doing something right!!!! They're as healthy as super old kitties can be & both get the zoomies still on occasion!

I also had a F3 purebred Bengal (that I rescued-long story) who I was told needed a raw diet & all these other special foods. He didn't like those..lol...and ate Friskies w my other kitties!

If she's happy & eating, keep feeding her what she likes & don't worry what anyone else thinks!
