Are there other cats in the household? I have one that rushes out of the box that is in our bedroom because she's afraid of one of the other cats-but she is fine in the other boxes. Our older kitty (22) often carries a feces on his butt and it falls eventually falls off, I'm not sure about why. Elderly kitties bring us new challenges but like you, I value them and we put up with whatever we need to. We don't use pine pellets and scoop the boxes several times each day, the cats don't really cover the feces but they seem to try.

Our last kitty stopped covering his as he got into his senior years (around the age of 17 or so).  We did take him in to the vet when it started, because it was so unusual for him.  But everything checked out fine.

Our older kittie did the same thing as she got up there in age - but I figured it was because she was relieved, may have had gas or something, and that's why she ran like a rocket out of the litter box.

Re: Cat Not Burying Poop

[ Edited ]

If she was having problems going poop, that could be a big part of it. We had to let go of our 18 year old cat recently and she had problems going poop and our vet recommended miralax. We would put a small amount - 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon in her soft food once a day and it worked wonderfully. She stopped covering her poop and running out of the litter box when her issued started and even though things got better for her, she still continued not covering her poop and running out of the litter box - everytime (sometimes she would drop a present). We also got very low litter boxes for her because of her age and her running out of them so fast. Did not want her to get hurt. I believe they are dog litter pans and they sell them at Petco. They worked great. I would do anything to have her still with us and her funny litter box habits. Miralax was a huge help for her. Good luck with everything. She probably will always do that from now on. Just makes her more special!!

@whatsmyname  Sometimes they just do that. Since all in the litterbox department is the same, here are A couple of thoughts.  After her constipation issue was resolved did she Stop running out of the box and now has started again?

You are treating that issue with diet.  Have you squeezed the poop to see if it is getting very firm again?  maybe some additional softener is needed?

Is she getting freaked out by the dingleberry clinging to her fur so is "running away" from it?

Since changing her food from the bladder diet could she be making urine crystals again?

Is she drinking adequate amounts of water?  or a lot or water?  At fourteen there are issues that become more common in older cats to consider.
