My one dog had chronic diarrhea for years.  Just in case you do not know, do not use minute rice.  Use the rice you have to cook.  I have used chicken, and I have used ground beef, drained, too.

Yes, the pure pumkin out of a can is good.  One TB for a small dog, as for my shih tzu, and 2 TB for a larger dog, 2 x a day is good to begin as soon as you see loose stools and hold off food for 24 hours, not water sometimes is all that is needed to rest the digestive system.  Then introduce the bland diet, for 2 days, and wean their regular back into for 2 days. and they should be ok.

You know your pet.  Use your judgement.   If not, get them to the vet, especially if they would not be drinking water.

This is just some advice I have from dealing with my guy over the years.

For chronic types, a paste put on food called, Diarsanyl does wonders!

Good luck, with your gal!  Hope she feels better real soon!

Could you explain why not Minute rice? I've seen several specialists for my dog's IBD and sensitive stomach over the years and none of them had any issues with Minute rice, even though I do not use it personally. I am curious why you stated no Minute rice. TIA!

HappyDaze~

I do not know the exact reason for not using minute rice. I did not use, as advised by my vet.

The exact instructions from my vet for my dog for his chronic gastrointestinal problem he had for years was to not use minute rice.  It should take at least 20 minutes to cook the rice.

Boiled chicken or boiled lean hamburger in equal amounts with the rice.  My dog loved this!

Also, water should be at room temperature.

In response to probiotics, a couple of months ago I started giving them to Storm. Right now I'm giving her Drs Foster & Smith's "probiotic soft chews w/prebiotics", since she still has issues when she's finished those I've ordered from Drs Foster "VetriScience" hopefully they help because with those they have auto-deliverey. In the event those are unsuccessful i'll try "Forti Flora", that name sounds familiar, I may have come across that one when I was looking for one. I will try pumpkin also, I didn't know that was good for stomach issues; I did give it to her as a pup because she used to love whatever was in my Goldens poop because she used to munch on it and only his (btw, it didn't stop it, nothing I tried prevented her from chowing down) - YUCK!!! Luckily she grew out of that.  As far as using Minute Rice, I wonder if it has some some kind of chemicals. Along with purchasing the chicken at Costco I also buy a big bag of rice, much cheaper than buying smaller bags at the store.

My dog never had intestinal issues, but she did have recurring bladder infections.  I gave her the VetriScience Probiotics and they worked like a dream!  (Although I also gave her the VetriScience Urinary, too.)  She loved the chews (and she was really picky about eating treats) and gobbled them down every day.  I got mine from Amazon, which has them on auto-delivery also.

I use the Composure from this brand for my pets for stressful situations and if we are traveling a long distance with them. Works really really well. We tried a regular prescription type product and it worked the opposite- he was even more stressed and hyper- so I was happy to find these.

FYI, probiotics take quite awhile to see a significant change- it is not a quick fix! So please give them at least a couple months to see a difference and several months to (hopefully) see a significant change. Obviously some dogs may take a bit longer, some may see significant changes quicker.

Maybe the pumpkin has too much fiber for a touchy stomach.

This thread is interesting to me because occasionally my Westie won't eat, and I can easily hear his stomach grumbling. I wonder if he eats something which upsets his stomach.  When he was new to me, I rushed him to the vet, and he was given some sort of injection and $70 later he was eating fine.  I don't do that now (ha!), knowing we'll get through it.  I just let him be for a while, sometimes try a little scrambled egg and/or chicken baby food.  He gets his appetite back in a day or so.  I've tried yogurt don't believe that helps.

It's good to know others have this issue occasionally too.

I use the frozen chicken  breasts from Costco too. I feed just a little more than the equivalent amount that I feed their regular food. Regarding the ratio, I just kind of play it by ear. I probably do more chicken than rice so that they feel more full.  I also give organic pumpkin in with it which is great for diarrhea. My dog used to have diarrhea and digestive issues (he has been diagnosed with IBD) fairly regularly until I started giving him Forti Flora probiotics about 2-3 years ago and since then, no, and i mean, no issues. I've been amazed at the changes in that regard.

I am sorry your pup is having issues. I truly know how hard it can be. I always feel bad when I hear about doggies that aren't feeling well. Smiley Sad

@HappyDaze - I wish I would have known about FortiFlora probiotics 5 years ago.  I am definitely making a note of this for future reference.

Also, hope things are going okay for you and your pet!

No I don't think that is it. My dog has a super sensitive stomach and diagnosed with IBD and they recommend it for him and he does well with it. He would throw up or have diarrhea if even the slightest change in diet.

@tends2dogs thank you so much. I actually wish I had known about it years earlier too. Thankfully I now found vets that really knows what they are doing! My dogs are elderly but in really good health considering their age. Take care!
