A half hour ago I went out and spread about 6 pints of birdseed on the ground around our bird feeeders. For the doves and squirrels and birds too. Sometimes there are so many birds, they all can't fit on the feeders so they eat from the ground too.
Spreading the birdseed there were several large areas that had piles of the birdseed. They were noticeable by their color against the green grass.
Just looked out. You can not tell I put any birdseed out. There were no piles of birdseed. None. The piles were at least an inch high.
What animal could have eaten them? When I first walked out to put the birdseed out something moved but I just saw movement not what it was. There is a cat that travels around our house on a regular basis. But cats don't eat birdseed. Or do they?

I have never seen any of those animals in the daytime. Now at night , I think we have raccoons and I know we have groundhogs.
But this morning I did not see any animal near the birdseed after I threw it on the ground.

The squirrels are there now - still no birds. But it took awhile for even the squirrels to show up.

Squirrels are the culprit at my house. Whenever I look out squirrels are hoarding everything. I don't know if the squirrels scare away the birds.

@drizzellla. I don't know who or what ate your seed but I discovered early that seed on the ground attracts rodents and I surely don't want them attracted to my property.

@drizzellla raccoons are nocturnal animals, we have had families of them since we moved here over 25 years ago. if you see a raccoon in the day hours, many times they are sick and just wandering around. We called our humane society to pick up several over the years, they had some kind of disease. Cats and racoons do eat birdseed we have seem them.
