Ava had a bout of vomiting and diarrhea a few(?) months ago.  I switched her food to Z/D per the specialist and she did fine.  The specialist told me to switch her back to a non-chicken based food after 8 to 10 weeks, which I did.  She did fine until a week ago,

She started throwing up white foam in the morning only about a week ago.  I started her on Pepcid at night with a little food so she wouldn't go to bed on an empty stomach (per the Vet).  That didn't help, so I asked if I could give her omeprazole instead of Pepcid.  The Vet said I could give her that twice a day, which I did.

Thinking it could be her food, I bought some Fromm Whitefish & Potato and began slowly transitioning her to it.  I had only done this for a few days.

Yesterday afternoon we were watching TV on my bed, and she threw up a lot.  It looked like all of her breakfast.  Then she continued to throw up five more times.  I gave her Cerenia to stop the vomiting, and she threw it up.  I called the Vet to see if I could bring her in for a Cerenia injection, and the Vet said she would squeeze her in for a full appt.

She seemed fine on her exam, and the Vet told me to go ahead and give her the Fromm only and we would know if it was the food.  If she continued throwing up on the Fromm, I will go back to the Z/D.  This morning she had diarrhea, which I unfortunately expected would happen with the switch of food without transitioning.  I started her on metronidazole.  I will give her a Cerenia this afternoon and then not again unless she throws up again.

I agree that she probably needs the Z/D forever, but I hate to pay over twice what a regular food is.  I will do it though.  The Vet said she would call to check on Ava on Wednesday.

I just wanted to vent.  If you've read this far, thank you.

This is Ava today:

I'm so sorry to hear that Ava is having problems again. Sounds like she'll have to stay on the food for good. I know the food is expensive, but if that solves her problems ... it's best to spend the money on the food and have her feel good than spend the money on the vet trying to make her feel better.

Several years ago I had a 135 lb Dogue de Bordeaux who was, I think, allergic to everything food-wise. You can imagine how much food she ate ... and vomited and had loose stool. The vet finally told me about Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Hydrolyzed Protein food and all her issues were resolved in less than a week. She did great on that food for her entire life, but it was super expensive and has only gone up since then ... but the constant vet visits stopped and she no longer had to take meds, so in my mind the price of the food was off-set by not having to pay the vet for visits/meds anymore.

Best of luck with Ava. It's so hard being a pet parent when we know our babies aren't feeling well.

@NickNack  So sorry to hear this. Do you think it would help if you gave her some rice, steamed carrots and maybe some small portion of beef, since she can't have chicken?  Usually our vet recommended  a bland diet of "people food" after my dog got sick.

Will be praying for Ava. I always go to St. Francis for help with all the animals.

Oh, poor Ava.  She looks like she's not feeling her best.  I hope you can get the situation figured out.  If it turns out to be the new food, at least that's an easy (though somewhat expensive) solution.  Finding the right food for each pet is really the trick of it all.

Sending prayers.  Please give Ava, and Henry, a kiss from me.

@NickNack  I am so sorry that sweet Ava is not feeling well.  It is times like this that we wish they could talk to us and tell us what is wrong.  I hope that the vet is correct and that the food will keep her healthy.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

I'm sorry to hear that Ava is sick again.  Ask your vet about d/d vs. z/d. Z/d is a hydrolyzed protein diet, and they can still trigger diarrhea and vomiting because of the way they work chemically.

Our vet switched to d/d, which is not a hydrolyzed diet, and Frankie's symptoms resolved almost immediately.  He said this has been true for dogs and cats that he's treating. The d/d comes in a couple of flavors, too. For the first time in years, she isn't having soft stools or vomiting/regurgitating.  We buy this on Chewy to save $$, because you're right, it's not cheap

Good luck for your baby!

Awwww, bless her sweet little heart, she looks like she doesn't feel well.

Our vets have always recommended a couple of tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie mix!) for stomach upsets or diarrhea and it's always worked well for me.

Keep us posted!

@Sammycat1   I just put this on my list to ask my Vet about tomorrow.  I went to the Hill's website and read about it.  Thank you!
