Re: At My Wits End - Dog Won't Eat

[ Edited ]

One of my friends has a lab. The lab has had pancreas problems his entire life. The dog is old now and is doing fine. My friend has given him a steady dose of pancreatic enzyme supps his whole life. That's what makes him able to eat food. Otherwise the dog is sick with vomiting and diarrhea. The enzymes digest food and w/o those the food goes right thru or is vomited.

I would ask your vet about getting your dog on a pancreatic enzyme supp. Pancreatitis means there's isn't enough enzymes being produced in the dog's gut and that's the problem.

Hope you and your vet can work through this.  So disturbing.

Just a little update on my Jake. I got him to eat some scrambled eggs this morning and a little boiled chicken tonight. I hope it doesn't make him sick.I am getting his medical records from the clinic anad taking him to another vet. This has been all I can think about and so stressful. Please say a little prayer for my Jake.Heart

I know everything seems stressful when dealing with our family member. He is struggling with his health and should be thankful that he belongs to you. It is a hard road for both of you but I am sure you will get a resolution. I will pray that everything comes together. I think going to a specialist would serve both of you well. I had two dogs that both required a specialist; needless to say it didn't workout but I did everything possible to save their lives. I will keep you and Jake in my prayers.

Re: At My Wits End - Dog Won't Eat

@Sapphiregal  You just described the history of my dog!!! My 7 pound Maltese got an attack of pancreatitis from eating a 1" square of Easter ham, and $2000. later and a night in the hospital he came home. I tried all the diets you named, and he always got tired of them. I got a new Vet and she told me that she feeds her 7 dogs a brand called "4 Health" by Tractor Supply. This CHANGED my dog's life!! The Vet told me to keep him off chicken (for life) and feed him the salmon version. The food is of the highest quality, and it is really cheap compared to other brands. (I pay $1.16 a can). He eats it with no problem and he is a healthy little troublemaker. Give it a try!! They ship from their website if you don't have a store nearby.

How is Jake doing?

Our dog was always a picky eater. But according to all the Vets and tests, he was in good health. Most days I ended up sitting on the floor and spoon feeding him. But then he started to stand up and walk away from me as soon as I sat down.

I hope you find the answer. It is so frustrating, wish they could talk to you.
