Our elderly Chow/Samoyed mix had glaucoma. We saw a canine opthalmologist for him who recommended that he take Occuvite, which is a human eye supplement. It's for overall eye health. Not sure if it will target cataracts specifically, but it shouldn't hurt. One pill a day for a 55 pound dog. Depending on the age of your dog, you may wish to see a specialist and have a surgery. Animal Eye Care is the group we used for our dog and were very pleased. I would also try to limit sun exposure because that can hasten the development of cataracts for your dog just like in humans. That said, if the cataracts cause blindness, dogs adapt quite well. Ours was completely blind at the end and he did just fine. Good luck.

@summerwind wrote:@Lovemyboots: I just checked my favorite wellness site, Earthclinic. They have a section for pet ailments, and I checked under "cataracts". There's several suggestions there, including castor oil drops in eyes, turmeric in food, and, oddly, sweet potatoes.
This is a sort of blog site, I think you'd call it, where people just post what's worked for them. Of course you should check most things, esp. the castor oil, with your vet. I'm fortunate in that my vet has a holistic bent, and approves everything I do, and even has her own suggestions.
It's easy to navigate, and you don't have to join unless you want to post. Good luck!
Thanks I'll check it out!

That is interesting about the Occuvite! I kind of wondered about something like that too. Actually I just had emergency eye surgery on my right eye because of a partially torn retina & I ordered some eye vitamins from HSN by Andrew Lessman. I realized I needed to be taking some for my eye health. Good reviews on them. I was kind of thinking I might share them with her. I am going to take her to the vet so I will ask her too. I have also heard that Turmac is good for a lot of things!! Another poster just before this mentioned that in her post. I am not sure how long she has had this because I have had such blurred vision after my surgery. It is clearing up & I think that is why I noticed her eye! I feel guilty for not seeing it sooner but I didn't plan my eye problems for sure!! Thanks for the information!

We had a husky /GSD mix and he lost his vision gradually in the one eye. We found a eye vet specialist. This was many years ago and there seems to be more choices now. At that time, we had prescription drops to put in his eye. It seemed to slow down the progression but more important it reduced any pain level and the eyelids from retracting. Every case is different but it gave him time to adjust to his diminished sight which seemed to give him time to learn to negotiate better once the sight was gone.
I would search the internet and then ask my vet. At least it will help you narrow down the choices and know what questions to ask. They have supplements for human eye health that are over the counter so maybe there are some for dogs. Good Luck.
