My son got an aquarium for Christmas when he was about 7 years old which started a lifelong love of fish.   While he was in school,  he worked in a pet shop and constantly brought home new fish.   His favorites were the cichlids but we also had saltwater fish.   The nice part was that he did all the maintenance.
