@Mz iMac   In the Hispanic culture where I live, typically there is a chihuahua as a house dog and a pitbull for the yard.  Many of the pitties are encouraged to be mean.

@Kachina624   That may be a generalization of the breed. Molly's trainer had a pitbull who was beautifully trained and laid quietly on the floor while we all sat in a circle watching our puppies get their commands.

@Shanus   It depends a lot on how they're raised and conditioned. Yard dogs are conditioned to be aggressive.  There have been several instances since I've lived here where they've attacked and killed kids and the elderly who were walking by the house.  They're also usually dog aggressive.  I avoid them at all cost, not knowing their propensities.  I carry pepper spray and a bat when I walk my dogs on my scooter.

If they were not evacuated prior to landfall there is little left to rescue.

Most shelters don't accept pets.

I was on the ground 3 days after Katrina hit.  We rescued animals until March.  There were plenty animal survivors.  Perhaps you are speaking of people.

Rescue groups from all over the country sent vans and re-homed animals to their states. Relayes were set up to move animals north and west where there was space.  Veterinarians also from all over donated weeks of time doing emergency surgery and neutering.

Swift-water rescue was in early. The National Guard helped spot and feed animals who were hiding as we could not search at night due to curfew.

Empty homes were searched daily, you may have seen the notes painted on houses about cats and dogs - search today - back tomorrow.

Neighbors posted notes of animals left in neighbors houses, and neighborhood by neighborhood, homes were searched, and researched.

The group I was with saved and homed over 5000 cats and dogs, two pythons, some gerbils, and a group of mini-horses.

Bless the Animals.
