I was fortunate enough to go on an African safari last year, and we encountered a lioness like that. The guides said she is kind of an outcast and that the other lionesses shun her. Males have mated with her, but she doesn't conceive, so she's likely sterile. Kind of sad, actually.  We all wished we could adopt her and take her home, so she'd always be loved.
