Am I Making. Mistake...Part 3

Well our little Sheltie Rescue has arrived on a transport from Arkansas.  We picked him up a week ago, and he has stolen our hearts ♥️!  What a sweetie...loves to be picked up and petted.  He sleeps on my bed while I’m reading or watching TV.  My daughter’s Golden, Sammy, loves to chase him and vice versa.  We’ve only had one accident in the house.  He follows my other dog outside or follows Sammy out, and does his business.  He’s a bit skittish with strange noises...microwave beeps, garbage disposal noise, etc.  he’ll get used to those noises soon, I hope.  He doesn’t mind car rides.  He wouldn’t, I suppose, as he traveled over two days from Arkansas to Maine, where we picked him up.

Someone at work mentioned that I must have gotten my puppy as I seemed happy and smiling a lot.  She said after Teddy died in July , everyone thought I’d never stop crying, or looking so sad.

I stilly  think about him every day, but this dog needs us, and we’re determined to make a nice home for him.  Our home was just so lonely and too quiet.  Now we are having fun again.

Thanks to everyone and the great advice , and that helping a new friend doesn’t mean any disloyalty towards a departed pet.  It’s because of the love you had for the deceased pet that enables a new pet to share your home again!

@AbbyK, I’m so happy for you and your family that he has arrived. He is beautiful and he will get used to the strange noises. I remember the first time Khloe heard me turn on the stove vent, she couldn’t get under the bed any faster. But not anymore. Please continue to post pics and let us know how he’s doing.

@AbbyK.  All the things you mention are typical for a new dog in the household including the accident.  Count your blessings that there has only been one.  Your little sheltie must be quite small; no way could I pick mine up and carry him around.

Only one question....what is his name?

Aww, so sweet, I have a lot of experience training Shelties and because  he is skittish, I would get him a martingale collar because he will not be able to slip out of it. The Lupine brand is good and guaranteed for life even if chewed. After he gets established with you and your household, I would bring him to training. Poor little guy, we don't know what he has been through. Training and agility will help build his confidence. Socialization as well. He is a beautiful boy, congratulations.

I have a rescue who I got when he was 2, he is now 6 and he had terrible separation anxiety. He is so much better now and he fit in with my 2 girls. I also have a female, who I got at 8 weeks and she had terrible fears. She is much better now and has really come out of her shell. The best thing you can do when something is scary is for you to act like nothing is wrong and move on with what you are doing. I also have a key word that I say to my scared female, it may sound crazy but her word is "silly goose" whenever she is afraid I say "silly goose" and she snaps out of it.

He will have to trust you first, he is brand new to your home. You will adore him. Thanks for rescuing Some Shelties end up in horrible situations because they are miss-understood.

You and your Sheltie seemed to have adjusted well to one another. I am so glad you gave it a try. Sounds like a WIN WIN for both of you.

Teddy is still in your heart. And your heart is going to find room for the new guy too. There is plenty of room.

I am thrilled it is working out so well. Do you have any history?

He is a beauty. Enjoy each others company.

@AbbyK    I second the suggestion about the harness,  The day I brought my sheltie home, I helped him out if the car, turned to shut the door and when I turned back around, I was holding a leash and a collar with no dog.  Fortunately he responded well to his name but he could have taken off.  As with any new dog, be sure you have an ID tag on him.

Just wanted to say congrats! He is a beauty! And also to offer my sincere condolences on Teddy. You got my attention there, because our miniature poodle Teddy has been battling cancer since June. I'm so sorry. It is so hard.
