All Occupants - both human and feline - of the Hemingway House are SAFE!

Even though the house was in the middle of the strongest part of the hurricane for two hours, the Hemingway house staff has reported that everyone is fine! They have cameras inside that can look around the property and it looks like the only damage they suffered was some downed trees. The house had no damage.

They are staying inside until the winds die completely down.

I haven't been able to see much hurricane coverage today, but I understand Key West was spared the intense damage they expected. Instead of a 12-15 foot storm surge, they had a 3 foot one.

I hear the damage in Miami is bad. I will be praying for the ones who had to stay behind there.

@beach-mom  I'm so relieved to hear humans and cats are okay.  Thanks so much for posting this.  I've worried about them all day.

No one should have been put in the position where they had to worry about them...

@phoenixbrd

I agree.  If this had taken the same toll there as it did elsewhere, these people and cats could have been history.  Not a wise decision, imo. Thank God they are safe.

The house was built on the highest point of the island, and has 13 inch thick limestone walls.

This house has survive strong hurricanes before.

But, I'm glad that everyone both with fur and without, came out unscathed.

An aspect of the decision is this...how long will it be before they can leave the Island or help get to the humans if they have a medical emergency? Just because you survive the storm doesn't negate the risk completely. They may be stranded for a bit yet.

As a lifelong cat lover and having been owned by many cats, and PLEASE I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but why are these sweet cats allowed to breed to this number? Is there a reason none have been spayed or neutered?

I'm NOT being nasty, but just wondering. With all the homeless cats in the world -- and I realize these cats DO have a home -- why is this?

I would truly appreciate any thoughts on this. I love cats dearly.

@Love my grandkids  The curator of the Hemingway House said that they allow one litter a year to carry on the gene.  I'm not sure how they keep it to only one litter, but that's what was said.  If this is the case, I understand completely.
