@AbbyK ~
No, you are not being disloyal to Teddy. Teddy will forever have a place in your Heart. He knows how much he was loved, and would not want you to be so sad.
I am where you are... Lost my BFF in early July like you did. Questioned my decision on another so soon, too...

I am glad you are getting another dog as well. As crazy as it sounds I think that the whole in your heart when you lose a pet allows you to have room to love another. You never forget your past pets. It is kind of like enjoying a flower and then it grows to be a bunch of flowers. You end up loving the whole bouquet!

Read this over several times... Your Teddy & My Phoenix? They would want us to share our Love with another. You & I will get through this. When you need to vent or chat with someone? There will be someone here for you. I know that for a Fact!

Dear AbbyK,
Here's a sweet poem that I can't remember from where I first saw it, perhaps on these forums somewhere. Anyway, after my Sammy died, I felt so guilty about getting another pet. Then I read this, and it just sort of made a lot of sense. We now have our Hobbes, who is a rescue, and he's brought so much joy back into our lives. I'll never stop loving and missing my Sammy, but I know that he's somewhere still, and is where he needs to be right now. I'll love him forever.
Best wishes to you.
"from a Dog's heart....
Before humans die, they write their last Will & Testament, give their home and all they have to those they leave behind.
If with my paws I could do the same, this is what I'd ask... To a poor and lonely stray I'd give: My happy home My bowl & bed, soft pillows and all my toys The lap which I loved so much The hand that stroked my fur and the sweet voice which spoke my name.... ....So when I die, please do not say, I will never have a pet again.... Instead go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or home and give my place to him. This is the only thing I can give; the love I left behind.."

@MalteseMomma-THIS. THIS is the one that has made me tear up. I think your brief, lovely story is one of the best pieces of life I’ve ever read here.
No need for me to say anything more but “Thank You!”
High hopes to you @AbbyK as you begin your new adventure......

Teddy will always live in your hearts. If you feel that the house is too empty now then you're ready to accommodate a new Sheltie. My only personal hesitation is that puppies while adorable are a LOT of work! However the puppy will help to heal you from your loss....you'll be so busy!
My brother got a new dog within days of losing his older dog. To me that's just too soon but everyone's different.

@AbbyK wrote:We lost our 8 year-old Sheltie early July, and we are still trying to find our way without our Teddy. His brother misses him still, we are still a mess. As time went on, we realized our house was so devoid of life...so lifeless without our guy. I found a Rescue Sheltie, 5 months old, who needs a home. He will be transported from Arkansas this week, and he is ours on Saturday!!
i feel terrible...did I jump too soon to adopt him? Am I being disloyal to Teddy? But Teddy’s never returning ...I’m so confused.
@AbbyK I think if you’re a fur Mama, you have a big heart...big enough to remember your love for Teddy and share your love w/ another little wagging tail.

@AbbyK You are grieving Teddy and these kind of feelings come with it. You are honoring Teddy by giving a much-needed life to a precious young life....your heart will soon fill with this new little fellow and Teddy will be jumping for joy on the other side of that bridge.....I do understand, my cousin endured the same thing when she lost her Schnauzer; with much thought and discussion she decided to get a Schnauzer pup...and Addie was a blessing to her since she lost her husband about 6 months after bringing Addie home. These wonderful creatures fill our hearts and yours is waiting! Best to you and your new little one!
