I would agree that adopting from a shelter would be preferable (I could never see myself spending $1,000 or more for a dog) but unfortunately sometimes the selection at the local rescue places is rather limited, mostly larger dogs.

All pets need a loving home. Whether they are from a shelter or a loving breeder.
We have adopted pups and kitties from shelter's and from wonderful loving breeders.

in the past, I have taken in rescues and have also paid thousands for dogs because I wanted a particular breed.
I can 100% say for sure that all my rescues have been challenges. All of my purchases were perfect.
I have two dogs now....same breed. One is a rescue and the other from a breeder.
My rescue is a big problem. She fights and has jealously issues. I can't trust her around other dogs, even for a minute. I have been bitten twice requiring medical care.
I am trying to make it work with her and it's not easy. I have mentioned about her issues on this forum a few times, so I am not going to go into it again, but I know that for some people a rescue is a good thing. And for other's it can make your life a living hell.
There is no one size fits all. If you want go rescue, knock yourself out. I know that I will not be doing it again.
I do donate money to rescue organizations.

There is too many homeless, stray and abused animals. We don't need more puppies and kittens to be born. So many animals sit in the shelters or are dumped or abused. No more breeding period. That is the answer until things get under control, no matter how long it takes. People who buy from breeders are selfish in my eyes. There are wonderful dogs and cats at the shelters and even purebred ones. I know, you need to have that piece of paper telling you that you own a purebred animal, that you paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for. Really, get a life. Maybe even - don't have an animal. So many unwanted animals out there, but yet people still need to buy a purebred. So sad.......................
I rescue animals, so I know what is happening. It is sickening. I do the best I can and will never stop until I am dead. I have read so many posts that say where can I buy a puppy, does anyone know any breeders? Just stop. To the comment about pitbulls, they are the most loving dogs out there. Period! It's simple, Adopt, Spay & Neuter.
I don't want you or the gov't telling me I must do any of the things you listed.
That is not the answer.
Your comments about those purchasing animals is uncalled for and rude.

@Buffalogal47 wrote:Some shelters charge such high adoption fees that discourage many people from adopting an animal. What difference does it make whether you buy or adopt as long as the animal has a loving home.
@Buffalogal47. It's not bad to buy as long as it's from a reputable breeder. So many dogs are produced in puppy mills where the "breeders" take a female at a young age and breed her over and over again. They usually never see the outside of the crate they are in. When that dog is no longer useful to them they get rid of her. A lot of the web pages and pet shops that sell dogs are these kinds of breeders.
It is best if you want a specific breed to find a place where you can go and see the mother and father. I have seen under cover videos of some of these puppy mills and the conditions are horrible. We have an area near us (Lancaster, PA) which is particularly bad.
Yes you are giving the dog a good home but buying from an unknown breeder keeps encouraging the people who run these puppy mills to continue. They are making a ton of money.
Some of these rescue groups do charge an adoption fee but they have expenses in getting the dogs, feeding them and sometimes spaying them. It's usually all volunteers who do this.

@Carmie. When you got the rescue did they tell you where it came from and it's history? This is a common problem with rescues because they are scared and untrusting. Some people send the dog back to the rescue and it gets a bad reputation. It's not always easy getting a rescue and sometimes it just doesn't work.

@Winkk I am the third house my rescue was in. I have personally talked to the other two families who have had her since she was born, including her breeder.
She was a singleton. No other siblings. She only weighs 10 lbs and is super petite.
I have been trying to make it work for almost two years. It is getting better, but is a full time job.I love her dearly, but never again. She is the tri-colored one.

I have done both with dogs and cats and loved them all. I am down to one Aussie and spend more on him, special food, vet, routine flea/tick and heartworm meds then I do myself it seems. Since I stopped coloring my hair he costs more to groom. I can't afford another dog and take care of them properly.
We humans mess everything up. Why designer dogs? Tiny teacup size dogs that are so fragile. Not taking care of pets so they cross breed and not wanted. Breeding because we want certain traits, colors, sizes, perceived status symbols, Best in Show? My Murphy is from a breeder, he was the one that no one wanted. But I did. He doesn't fit the breed standard, he's to big, his hind end is much to big, he has a funny face but the most beautiful red merle coat. And after 10 years I still don't know which one of us is the master LOL
Thanks to all that do rescue work

@Carmie ..That's a shame. I wonder what her problem is? Good luck I hope she gets better.
