Don't give him any money unless you are ready to say it's a gift.  Period.

Family members sometimes need help and that's perfectly ok.  In your FIL's case, it sounds like he needs a reality check.

Re: family members need money help

My oldest brother has no problem -asking for money( for years) from my parents ( who live comfortably but not extravagant). He'll say " I need new tires for the van and my Dad would cut back on his own lifestyle to send the money-then to find out my brother never did get tires but there is a new 100 gallon fish aquarium in his living room.

My Dad was upset and confided in me (parents divorced). I suggested if he chooses to help again, not to send a check made out to my brother but to the place of purchase (Tires Plus, etc.).

Some people! Now my brother has held a second job for a few years and hasn't asked since.

Re: family members need money help

@sissel sounds similar to my gfs dad.He is 90 and out of control too.She found out that he has dementia. He had a string of much younger women who spent all of his money and then he needed money from my friend to keep up his lifestyle.

She had to get power of attorney and put him into an assisted living home.He was angry at first but now he has met some other man who still drives. That man has a convertible and the two of them are out "babe cruising" all of the time.My friend doesn't know what to do about him to keep him safe....his doc told my friend that he uses too much viagra and that she should try to talk some sense into him as it is dangerous to his heart. She tried but her dad told her to mind her own business.

Stop the money. If he needs it to live on, pay his rent and bring him groceries.

I'm amazed that a 90-year-old cruising for women in a convertible would get results.  I'd expect him to attract women close to his own age, who presumably are not "picked up" using that kind of approach.  Anyway, if at 90 he uses too much Viagra, I'd imagine it's not a bad way to go.
