Goodnight Moon.
I started our sons and grandsons on this book.
They love looking for the mouse which causes signals in the brain to grow.
All of them were early readers.

Any of the Priddy books and DK books are great. I would suggest board books from either of these publishers for the first 2 yrs so she can touch and feel and not rip the pages. Some have touch and feel pages and those are also fun. You can read the simple words in the board books to her and show her the pictures...this is how you teach her about her world...they are never too young to start hearing words and seeing their pictures. The many classics listed by others are all great read-alouds. Never too early to read to babies....

The Beatrix Potter books are wonderful for a very young child. They are small and easy to handle and I found the old fashioned words to be a delight that young children love to hear.............like bumbershoot, galoshes. They stories are short and adorable, perfect for bedtime.

When my first granddaughter was a baby....she was less than a year old....i had a board book about a farm. Each page had different farm scene drawings. She would sit on my lap and i would say, "Where's the barn? Where's the tractor? Where's the house?" and she would point to the picture.
Used that same book with all the grands!
For a newborn, it's the rhythm of your voice they like. Dr. Seuss books are in poetry form, which is great. Ot any children's poetry would be wonderful.
