Re: Shanghai Daughter left for China yesterday

I normally don't get involved in some of these discussions as we all are passionate about something or other.

But I can't let this one go. Having spent the first 30 years of my life as a military wife I want to remind Blue Collar Babe that she may never have had the opportunity to be "blue collar" if someone had not fought for our freedom in some pretty unsafe places. Our children grew up thinking they had a wonderful opportunity to see the world and at my husband's retirement his only comment was, "I kept our flag clean." I still tear up over that on days like tomorrow.

People in many, many occupations find they must go overseas with their families to keep our country free. God bless them and protect their families.

Oh please, her daughter's husband is not a soldier and neither is her daughter. And, believe me when I tell you that I do not need you to remind me of how my freedoms were won. I come from a family that has served this country in the military for many generations.

But those soldiers did not take their babies to the battle zone with them and Ethiopia is no place to take your infant children. Also the OP posted a couple of years ago that her DD's husband "got the adventure bug" and joined the foreign service. So go alone like a soldier does or have more concern for your family. The U.S. Dept. of State lists Ethiopia as a "hardship" posting. There is a lot of danger today in foreign service, much more so than 30 or 40 years ago and the stress is great. Everyone gets these hardship postings now and even several times in their career. That is no way to raise a young family.
