My go-to baby gift is a beautiful hand-crocheted baby blanket and matching hat (from a wonderful Etsy vendor) and a big box of disposable diapers.

At least 4 crib sheets and 4 flannel covered crib sized rubber sheets.

You layer them all at the same time, rubber sheet on the bottom, crib sheet, rubber sheet, etc. That way if you have to change the sheet due to diaper accidents, wet burps, etc, (especially in the middle of the night), you just pull off a layer and the crib is clean.

those saddlers that close with Velcro were a life saver....hold baby in close so they can be still and sleep

My must have when my daughter was a baby was an electric swing. She loved that thing and it's the only place she'd sleep for the longest time. When that thing broke, we were besides ourselves.
