I saw a brief interview with Joey who was thrilled to be back as he missed last year's due to some sort of conflict as he was representing a meatless product.

Competitive eating is a sport. I don't know where they put them either! Bless them and congratulations to the winners.

A sport?    I was under the impression that most contestants end up vomiting everything they just shoved down their throats.

I can't even imagine how this started.

They have to reguritate all those dogs.  The body cannot process all that food.  Imagine getting all plugged up with that amount of food.  That would include a hospital visit.

Not a good idea at all, IMO.

Many years ago at the local homecoming game there were assorted "spirit activities" going on.  One was a hotdog eating contest during halftime.  A student started choking.  Our family doctor's son was on the team and Doc was on the sideline.  When the choking happened, he quickly hopped a fence and rushed to help the boy.  It was scary but he was ok.

Sometimes I have a problem swallowing.  It doesn't happen often.  DH were in a restaurant a year or so ago and I was struggling with a bite of shredded beef.  It was dry and not breaking down.  I took some water and tried to swallow but the meat got stuck.  DH sat there looking at me.  I made a gesture and he realized what was going on.  He did the Heimlich on me.  Afterwards a number of people passed by asking if I was ok.  I was so embarrassed but relieved - kinda shaky when it was all over.

Re: NATHANS HOT DOG EATING CONTEST

@JeanLouiseFinch   you're right about that.  Hot dogs are a food that many choke on.

I am sorry that happened to you.  How scary.  Thank goodness your husband knew first aid.

At work once, there was a commotion a few tables over while we were eating lunch.  A very tall young man was choking.  He was eating lunch with nurses.  One of them was trying to do the heimlich on him but she wasn't tall enough to really help much.  Another nurse took over and saved him.

Then they all sat down and finished eating.

When I volunteered at an elementary school, I heard the kids screaming.  When I checked on them, a boy was choking on a big gum ball that was on a birthday cupcake.

I did the heimlich on him until he popped out the gum ball.  Then the bell rang and the kids left the cafeteria.  I told the boy to stop in and see the nurse.

When I got a chance, I checked with the nurse, but she didn't know anything about it, so I explained.

Two days later, the principal came to talk to me in front of others, not even in private. He yelled at me.  I was told to never do that again and always get the nurse.

There were two teachers and two paraprofessionals and me in the cafeteria that day.  I was the only one who acted.

The nurse wasn't even in her office at the time.  She was out to lunch.

The principal was an idiot.  I had many disagreement with him over crazy stuff.  If i had to do it over, I'd do the same thing.  The heck with him.

@JeanLouiseFinchWhen we first got married we were having another couple over for dinner.  I made steak (probably not as good a cut as we can afford now) anyway I chewed and chewed and then tried to swallow, I was choking but didn't want to say anything I was embarrased and ran to our room, then I thought I'm choking I need help so I ran out to where everyone was and right then the food came up!  I was embarrased but lived to tell about it!

When my kids were small that was my biggest fear and my first always seemed to choke on things.  I took a CPR class I was so afraid.

@Carmie - a situation where quick action is necessary and you're supposed to go look for the nurse? 🤦‍♀️. My DH has been at the right place at the right time before. Once, at a family cookout, my nephew was choking and had a panicked expression, gesturing that something was going on.  DH acted and an ice cube popped out.  Fortunately for us, many years ago his employer required everyone to take a first aid class.

I find it disgusting.  I hate to even hear the reports.

Re: NATHANS HOT DOG EATING CONTEST

@JeanLouiseFinch   I took a first aid training course too, but that was the only time it was needed.

I saved a drawing victum when I was maybe 15 or 16.  I learned a lot since then. I almost drowned too.  I learned not to get close enough for them to latch on to you.

I wish I look the life saving swim course before I tried to save someone swimming ...my cousin's daughter.

Re: NATHANS HOT DOG EATING CONTEST

I think this type of competition can be dangerous and unhealthy, no matter what.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
