I would say New Orleans; you have the food, the shopping, the ride through the Garden District on the trolley car, the French Quarter music and ambience, a casino, etc.
But ... if she suggested NYC that's probably what she wants. My mom took me there on a whirlwind trip when I was young, and I did the same for my younger sister; it was quite memorable. I'd go for that!

May be off the wall, but Colonial Williamsburg? It is fun to go through the buildings and listen to guided tours, learn something about history and the people who were the founders, go to the little shops, and stop when you are hungry and eat. In spring and fall it is especially beautiful there.
It is safe, interesting, and to me very relaxing just to be able to walk around at your leisure and enjoy the setting. It would give you relaxed time together, some shopping and dining, and it is a place that stimulates conversation and relaxation.

Cruise up the eastern coast to Canada. Never did that one. And then I would take a train across most of Canada. Never did that either.

If you're staying in the US I'd say some place north, love New Orleans, but it is still HOT in the South East in September and it's hurricane season.
Seattle is nice in the fall, so is Portland, and many of the towns on HWY 1 northern Calif.
If going out of the US, I'm always up for Italy. The Amalfi Coast is beautiful and it will be harvest time for the grapes and olives. Lots of tastings, walking, good food, cool, breezes, ...

Las Vegas is fun. You don't have to gamble to enjoy it.

Travel by train sounds nice and relaxing...

OP, since you're in Michigan and your daughter is in Chicago, why not go someplace like Grand Traverse Resort or The Homestead? Perhaps Mackinac Island? It wouldn't take up much of your time to get there, giving you more time to relax and just hang out with each other.

Mall of America?
Chicago has TONS to see and do.
Las Vegas (lots to do besides gambling) and/or Grand Canyon.
