Can you give us some idea of where you are located. I know of a good breeder in our general area, and have heard of another in the South Carolina area. Our family and some friends have had Goldens from both kennels and they have been fine, healthy animals. I can't recall the names off the top of my head, but if they are anywhere near you, please let us know.
To each his own, but all in all I think I like most dogs better than most people.I wish I could somehow be more like the person my dog thinks I am. Not new words, but true words.

There's an unfortunate stigma against shelter and rescue dogs as being, in lack of other words, "tainted", "dirty", "sick", etc. A majority of which are not. Plenty of great dogs in shelters for a vast majority of reasons. You'd be surprised how many litters are in rescues.
Petfinder.com is a great resource and you can search for your breed.
Good Advice! Please consider adopting from rescue NOT buying from a "breeder". All and I do mean all of my dogs over the years have been adopted from a shelter or rescue org. These have been the best ever! I would not change a thing.
Many rescues use private foster homes for the care of the dogs until they are adopted, thus they are fully vetted, clean, housetrained, socialized etc. and are a joy to have in your life. Petfinder, helps you find the breed and age you are looking for, PLUS, puppies are available there. Big Suprise?! yeah, I know!
Adopting may just save that dogs life if it is at a high kill shelter. You have to be very careful with looking for breeders, as puppy mills and backyard breeders will call themselves "breeders", which they are not.(A friend had to find out the hard way.)
Save a rescue dog/puppy and they will love you always, and you will be glad you did!

I am not sure why a rescue or shelter dog "is not for you:". There are many that specialize in specific breeds, pregnant dogs (thus puppies available) etc. Some are pure bred others can be wonderful mixes. I adopted a 8 week old puppy from a rescue and a 4 month old puppy for the county pound (he was picked up as a stray). There are some absolutely wonderful both young and old dogs that are looking for homes that will make amazing pets for many years.
If you insist on buying a puppy, expect to wait. Reputable breeders will only breed when they have people available. There are often wait lists, some for years. Health certificates are available for both parents. Hips, eyes etc. should be certified free of genetic defects. A reputable breeder will also have you sign a contract with the terms of the sale. Some may have stipulations concerning spay/neuter arrangements, breeding rights, titling requirements and all will take the dog back if you are no longer able to keep him. Responsible breeders want their dogs taken care of for life and often screen applicants as well as keep track of them after the sale.
Sorry for your loss, however do consider adopting a rescue.

Commercial breeders (puppy mills and even back yard breeders) have become very good at deceiving buyers. They are breeding for money, not the betterment of the breed. As they say buyer beware.

ccassaday--Note that there are plenty of places near you on PefFinder by location. Thank you for being so open-minded and considering a rescued puppy. I have NEVER had a problem with other dogs or small children. You just really need to fall in love with a special rescue dog and see for yourself! Good Luck!
