Does anyone else have this problem? I am trying to buy an outfit for my 4 year old granddaughter for her birthday this month. Problem is what size do I get? She was wearing a size 4T back in the spring, and kids grow so fast I bought a 5T so she can wear it for fall and winter even though it may be slightly big right now (I don't think there is THAT big of a difference). However, my DIL puts clothes on her that fit like skin on baloney. It makes me uncomfortable just looking at her! I know that if I ask, my DIL will say to get a 4T. My feeling is, the kid will wear it only for a short time and then it will be too small. I asked the ladies at the Carters store, and they all said it seems that mothers nowadays all dress their kids in outfits that fit perfectly. I had two boys and I always liked to see them in comfy clothes that weren't tight. I took a chance gettting the 5T. I hope she'll let her wear it - it's an adorable pants and top of a popular cartoon character.

I would stick with the 5T and keep the receipt. It can always be exchanged if it's too big.
I ordered my grandson 2Ts (he's 18 mos.) outfits over the summer. Not all were the same. One was much larger than the other two.

@Bubby Mommy I would definitely stick with the 5T. I have gone thru this with 3 little granddaughters. I also learned that you have to take into consideration for shrinkage once clothes are washed. Just my opinion. 🤷🏻♀️

It also depends on the brand.
I know Old Navy runs very small and once it's washed and dried, forget it, give it away.

No brainer. Ask the child's mother what size you should buy for HER child. Like it or not, the mom decides how she wants her child's clothes to fit. If buy something she thinks doesn't fit, she never put it on her kid. I have four grands and this is what I do. I also buy styles their moms will like. When in doubt about something, I confer with the moms.

I have two granddaughters. I love clothes. When they were young I would not purchase clothes for them. DIL always had them fitting tight, if they weren't going to wear them I wasn't going to waste my money. I could always find other things they could use.
Now that one is in college and one turning 13, different story. I know what they like and they know if they don't want it to tell me and they can get something else.
No stress or bad feelings.

I believe "T" size clothes are cut wider than regular size clothes. She could probably wear a 4R and it would not be too tight.
