Ham for Christmas and chicken for New Years.

My mother has some superstition that you never have poultry products for New Years. Heaven only knows where that came from but I still avoid it every year on New Years Day!

I believe it has something to do with the scratching for money all year whereas the kraut means you'll have money. Or something like that LOL!!

I make hog maw (stuffed pig's stomach) and sauerkraut and pork on New Year's Day. My PA Dutch heritage claims that if you eat sauerkraut on New Year's Day, you will have money in your pockets all year! By the way, hog maw is delicious!

Indeed it is! We stuff the pig stomach with sausage, onion, celery and potatoes. Roast for several hours in a 325-degree oven. I always use an electric knife to slice it. It is so good! As soon as we mention stuffed hag maw, our son comes running, too. Yes, a PA Dutch thing. Stuffed beef heart is good, too.

We don't have pig stomach for New Year's though. Just the pork and sauerkraut. But my sister and I get together once a year for stuffed pig stomach.

I've done a lot of different things for Christmas. Turkey, ribs, cornish hens....sides are more casual than thanksgiving...cold pasta salad, etc. I've done honeybaked ham quite a bit. This year will be unconventional....I'm divorced now and my adult kids will be over...they want a pasta dish I made for them back when I was married to their father...cajun spiced chicken with linguine and peppers in a cream sauce.

I'm thinking apple cranberry cobbler for desert.

New Year's I do nothing special.

mmmm - I don't blame the kids for requesting that cajun spiced chicken with linguine and peppers in a cream sauce ....

Prime rib and a turkey breast for Christmas. Something with blackeyed peas for New Years---maybe hopping john.

Re: what main dish do you make for Christmas/New Years

We usually have turkey and ham with all the trimmings at Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year we decided to change Christmas up a bit with more traditional Puerto Rican fare. Penil, Pasteles, Arroz con Gandules, potato salad, green beans, collard greens, turkey, stuffing, gravy, bacalaítos, empanadas, shrimp w/cocktail sauce, stuffed mushrooms, deviled eggs, guayabate with cheese and salad w/French bread. (I'm happy because I love Puerto Rican food and I only have to make the turkey, gravy, stuffing potato salad and greens.)For New Year's we have roast pork, collard greens, black eyed peas, rice, stewed tomatoes and cornbread.

I need to come to your house for New Years. Maybe I need to do a pork.
