Re: the problem with an over-the-range microwave...

Mine is over the gas stove too. Perfect in my galley kitchen. No room for one. I am short too so not in the way. Also have a french door toaster oven on the counter that I use every day. Much easier than bending down into the oven which I never use.

Pros and cons. I like how they look over the stove, but I'd probably have burned myself taking hot liquids out of it. Ours is on the counter.

When we remodeled our kitchen, I wanted a beautiful range hood over our stove, so we put our microwave in our pantry....works great. I never cook in a microwave, anyway. Just use it to warm some things up.

This was going to be my response almost word for word except I wanted the new pretty tile to run all of the way up where the micro was.  They took the huge thing out and we got a small counter top one that resides in our utility room at the end of the galley kitchen.  We have a very small kitchen.

Knit chick.omg. that's totally sucks.I never had an over the stove microwave. I always thought it would be awkward taking hot stuff out of it. My wife one time made Alot of homemade ravioli.she spent hours making them and they were in the fridge and my parents were over for dinner and my dad went in the fridge and he spilled fruit punch on the ravioli.  He didn't do it on purpose but my wife was so not happy. That's what I thought of when I read your post. I hope your sauce was still good. I would have still ate your sauce and I'm sure it was still delicious.
