The discussion if beignets reminded me of my New Mexico sopapillas, fried doughnut like with no filling but honey on side. Not Indian Fry Bread, that's another thing. My youngest son loved sopapillas and is often disappointed by what some Mexican restaurants serve as such.

I guess every region has their version of this. I lived somewhere where jelly doughnuts were called berliners. and of course near Lent Michigan has thesuper rich jelly doughnuts whose name I just forgot.
