And we survived too. I can vaguely remember getting a vaccine in the form of a sugar cube. Or am I dreaming?

The vaccine in the sugar cube was the polio vaccine.

@OKPrincessI remember this, too! It was experimental and we had to go to our local public school on the weekend to get it. It seemed too good to be true - we kids kept expecting them to pull out the needles once they had us where they wanted us. 😉

I was born in France and have few of your recollections. I had delicious yogurt. Sugar only came in cubes. I never saw pizza or pasta till much later. I was born in 1950 and you mom just did not make noodles.  I did not see a chip at our home. Our chickens did have feet, they went in the soup.

We did have pizza (with a sea of grease on top)- mostly in bars that my dad used to bring home and a pizza place with square pieces.  Several other pizza places started opening in the late 50's but it was just a special treat.  For us bananas and oranges were always in our home and we had cubed sugar for my dad's coffee.  Prunes were widely used in Polish and Slovak cooking especially for pieroghies.  Though I remember that hamburgers were not really eaten or even sold in restaurants except in bars.  The only milk was whole milk that came in bottles with cream often gathering at the top.

Dairy Queen was only open in the summers, and ONLY served ice cream.
