Re: "Friendsgiving"...what am I missing?

So is friendsgiving only for friends?  Why just include anyone on Thanksgiving, friends and family alike?

Re: "Friendsgiving"...what am I missing?

my kids (all adults now) enjoy doing Friendsgiving with their friends. some are married, some have partners, some are single, some have children. they do it sometimes before thanksgiving, sometimes after. no one is responsible for the entire meal. everyone brings (or is assigned) one or two dishes to bring to contribute. it is a great way to get together during the holidays when most are busy with their families on the actual holiday. i think it is a wonderful way to celebrate love and friendship  amongst friends.

@rms1954 Families tell stories friends wouldn't know about or understand, and vice versa.  Some families don't get together a lot and it's a family oriented holiday--which is nice.

MarkCharles Misilli had a Friendsgiving dinner. Tara Tescher and Mary DeAngelis were among his guests. He posted pictures on Instagram.

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it.
For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

To be honest I don't think this is something all that  new.  Just gave it a name.

My friends and I do this at Christmas time.

Re: "Friendsgiving"...what am I missing?

I had never heard of the term "Friendsgiving" until I saw this thread.  I thought right away it's another made up word.  But I agree with the OP, and with a few other posters.  Thanksgiving is about entertaining or visiting family and friends and celebrating with food.  Then somebody came up with a new word for it.  Why, I don't know.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Re: "Friendsgiving"...what am I missing?

I think it's just a term given lately to what many have been doing for a long time.  Having a "Thanksgiving" meal/get together with friends or coworkers.

Many people do include friends with their family Thanksgiving.  Great!  Some can't or don't want to for various reasons.

But there are others that have friends that are not physically close to their families, like kids away at college, that may want to be together.  And coworkers, especially those that all have to work on Thanksgiving.  Others may have reasons they can't get together on the actual day of Thanksgiving but want to celebrate together.

I think it's a wonderful idea, especially for those that may not have a traditional family Thanksgiving.  And yes, the term has been co-opted by retail to use as a sales tactic.  What hasn't nowadays?

I say it's redundant because Thanksgiving as I've always known it, is a time for family and FRIENDS to gather and give thanks.  Anyone who has ever hosted a Thanksgiving knows it's a tremendous amount of planning and work.  I can't imagine having to do it twice.

Reading the responses here, I've learned that it's more often a pot-luck gathering, which makes more sense to me.  Thank you to those who have taken the time to clarify.
