I think w/a cast iron you have to condition it. Google

@mollymaggie , please provide more details about the pan. If it is untreated cast iron, it needs to be seasoned. If is has an enamel finish, seasoning is not required, but use of a cooking oil helps to prevent sticking. Some types of cast iron have a nonstick finish and these often claim no seasoning or oil are required.
So, what is your pan? Untreated? Enameled? Nonstick? Something else I haven't thought of?

Which brand? Zakarian? I have the baker and two fry pans and I think they are fabulous. Don't even need butter or oil. I can just wipe them out with a paper towel.

@mollymaggie you may have to experiment with what works best for you. I have several cast iron pans and when I cook I make sure the pan is heated and then I add a little butter before cooking the eggs. If you don't want the fat, I discovered Pam cooking spray works well when using high heat and the food doesn't stick.

I have yet to come across a cast iron pan that doesn't stick, no matter what it's coated with.Cast iron needs oil, to preseason with and to cook the food.

Most of the thin nonstick skillets develop hot spots in no time which results in sticking.
I have never ever owned a nonstick pan that you could fry an egg in without the use of a tiny bit of bacon grease or butter. I would not expect to do that with a brand new cast iron skillet either. Even my well seasoned cast iron needs a little something with some foods.

I'm no expert cook for sure! But cook with a lot of enamel cast iron and regular cast iron.
When cooking eggs - usually causes most sticking - I cook it low, very low and slow, letting it finish off burner. Also I like to add evoo/butter for the taste and also adds to flavor.
So guess I recommend very low and slow. Then there's no problem.
Also if ever a problem, after pan cools I put dab of dish soap and hot tap water in the pan and leave it soak overnite; then just wipes out next morning!

Do not cook eggs in a cast iron skillet. Delicate fish fillets might be a problem, too. A non-stick coated pan works well for these.
Different tools for different cooking jobs. One size does not fit all in cookware.

@Equuleus, I just got the Zakarian nonstick cast iron skillet. The first point under important safeguards and maintenance care says:
Always preheat your cookware with oil, butter, or water. Never heat your cookware with a dry surface as this can result in property damage or injury.
The second point (which also surprised me) was:
Use low to medium-high burner heat when cooking to avoid damage to the cookware or coating.
