Just curious what does everyone use buttermilk for?

Biscuits? Pancakes? Just a guess!

Also buttermilk is great if your mouth breaks out from the acid in tomatoes!  Peroxide on a Q tip does the same!

I have heard of those and also I think I have heard of soaking  chicken in buttermilk prior to frying.

I use it mostly for cornbread and mashed potatoes, but if I make biscuits, which is rare since I'm messy, I use buttermilk for that too.  Lots of recipes use buttermilk.  There's also a buttermilk pie which is similar to chess pie I think.  Plus, you can drink it.  My father used to often have cornbreadn crumbled into buttermilk after a meal and my daughter picked up that habit for awhile though I think she has now abandoned it.

Buttermilk pie is similar to lemon chess if you took out the lemon if that makes sense!

Re: buttermilk availability?

Have not had a problem at all getting buttermilk. Readily available. As for uses, some people drink it like regular milk. We use it in making pancakes and waffles. Muffins, some cakes. Mashed potatoes. Very versatile ingredient.

I drink buttermilk every day. I mix it with pomegranate juice, and it's delicious and healthy, although I'm sure, a little odd!   My favorite local store never had any buttermilk on the shelf  for weeks on end- They displayed 25 versions of oat, soy, almond milk, but no buttermilk!

I finally had to go and talked to the management, and wah-lah!  Tthe situation was remedied!

Re: buttermilk availability?

No problem finding it in my store--wonder why is it hard to find---I used to drink it when I was little--both my folks did--I do like using it for baking but DD can't do dairy----so I don't buy it.

Re: buttermilk availability?

Yes, the powdered buttermilk in the can is a good substitute. It keeps a long time in the refrigerator, more than the few days fresh buttermilk lasts.
