We had a side-by-side and I despised it with a passion. There was never enough room in the fridge to store food! I have a lot of large family dinners and picnics and I was forever asking my sister to store some of the food in her fridge. It was such a pain to be constantly trying to maneuver platters and casseroles around in that thing. And forget about a large Thanksgiving turkey....impossible. We had had a standard fridge, too, with the freezer on top. I'm only about 5' 4" so forget about searching around in a top freezer. What a hassle that was, too.
About four years ago, we went with a Samsung 4-door French door with the ice maker and I love, love, love this fridge! I no longer have to finagle around trying to find fridge space. Yes, the freezer is on the bottom; I have no trouble with it at all. I do try to keep it organized as much as I can and I find that good organization helps quite a bit. I love the drawer in the freezer for things that we use most often. The bottom part of the freezer is divided up into two compartments....I have no problem.
I really like having that drawer between the fridge and freezer; it's perfect for food trays or for wine bottles and bottles of soda and such. I keep my lunch yogurt there, my container of instand yeast, containers of rice, bulger, and the like. Since it's all stored there, I have more room in the fridge itself.
Usually on Sundays, after I've figured out what the menus will be for the upcoming week, I'll get into the large freezers in the basement and bring up what I think I'm going to need for the week: meats, containers of vegetables or fruits, whatever I'm making for side dishes and desserts and throw it into the freezer in the kitchen.
I really like this French door fridge....there's simply not enough room in a side-by-side for how we use our fridge.

I've had several side-by-side frigs in the years past. Thought that was the only choice I had. We built new a few years back and I sprung for a 4-door french door frig. French doors are the frig, middle drawer I can change from a frig or freezer and then the pull out freezer drawer on the bottom. I, too, never thought it would hold enough and I really love it much more than my side-by-side freezer area.
