@BetsyDoodle, take a look at the assorted set that was in David's show yesterday. It has a range of rectangular nestables in different sizes, including a 9 x 13. It's been out for a few weeks and colors are getting limited (my favorite, Sangria, sold out during yesterday's show) but they still have several options left.

Re: Would like to purchase my first set of Lock & Lock

I have many sets and have given many as gifts.  My suggestion is to choose a color and own it.  Whenever I see a red lid I know the container's mine.  (I have 4 grown kids and they each "have their own color"; returning Mom's is pretty obvious!!!!)  Of course I use the "sets" with smaller pieces for left overs, snacks, etc., but I especially like the 9x13", pie carrier, and square appetizer tray K42708.  Oh and if you're in the market for a large cooler bag, K43917 just cannot be beat!

I love Lock & Lock! I would first suggest you consider you cabinet space or where ever you plan to store your set. If you have limited space (like I do) then I prefer the nestables. I do keep the larger varities in my buffet for those holiday meals and specialty foods. I like the "while supplies last" options because they give you a variety of sizes and shapes. I also ordered a couple of sets of the pantry storage sets and it really made a difference in the what I could keep in that cabinet.  The inventory seems to have a variety to choose from so this is a good time to start.

I would offer just the opposite advice. Not that I don't have lots of their bowls, but their bowls leak. Every single one of them, if put to rigorous test, will leak.

Most of their squares and rectangles do not. I've noticed that they never shake the bowls over the hosts head (like they did with the rectangles back in the day), and they never put the bowls under water with something dry inside to show you they don't take on water.

Don't get me wrong, their bowls are nice, but absolutely not 100% leak proof.

I'd recommend the sets that all nest down inside each other WITH THE LIDS ON. They call those and the ones that don't fit together with lids on as 'nestable' but I really prefer they all nest with lids on for real space savings.

Think about the sizes you are wanting. I like their cereal keepers and big pieces like the 9x13's a lot too.

And one more thing that I notice is that the clear sets, with the blue seals are much more substantial (the seals are more substantial I mean) than those sets with colored lids and clear seals.

All my pieces with the blue seals and clear lids, have a much thicker and better quality seal than the ones that have colored lids and clear seals. They don't leak, lock down tighter and just have a much 'beefier' seal.

Thanks everyone for your great recommendations!  I think the nestables are the way to go or I have been looking at the Zen.  Time to plunge right in and purchase!  Probably nestables to start, I can always get more!

I would try the nestables and the zen bowls. Absolutely love them. Then work your way up from there. I use them for everything. A suggestion, if you freeze in them, pull out the night before to de-frost, you don't want to break the tabs. Trust me, you will love them. Never had a problem with mine.  Enjoy!

@BetsyDoodleI have a household of 2 and find the ones I use the most are the rectangle 8" x 5" about 2-3" depth our leftovers fill those just fine and they can be stacked evenly 2 -3 high on refrigerator shelves. Also the Zen 1 cup  are wonderful for 'dibs & dabs'.  I frequently warm 2 or three of these and call it lunch for myself. Both sets have varied colored lids and I do not think QVC has them now. I will order second sets if they come back.

I find L&L does great in the DW but if microwaved for very long can pit.

I guess we all have different experiences with consuming. @Mominohio said the best ones she had were clear with the blue seal . Those are the only ones I ever had problems with . Two cracked, the clip broke on another (it was frozen and Mrs. Clumsy dropped it--in it's defense). I still use them for dry packaged goods. I guess it is like other products it depends on the day they were made.

All in all I am addicted and have no plans to stop.

Re: Would like to purchase my first set of Lock & Lock

Definitely choose nestable L&Ls - unless you have a lot of storage space in your cabinets.

I prefer rectangular or square shaped containers because storing them in my cabinets, fridge or freezer makes more efficient use of my space. If efficiency of storage space isn't an issue, round containers are fine.

In choosing size, think about what you'll want to store and choose the sizes that will best meet your needs. I use mine primarily for leftovers and don't need huge containers. Your needs may differ.
