Will a warming tray take the place of a heat lamp?

I have a chance to buy an electic flat warming tray or plate at a local auction.  I have often wished I had a heat lamp like in restaurants to keep food on a plate warm while I'm still dishing things up.  Does anyone have one of these trays and what do you think of it?  The fact you can't find them all over the place makes me think they may not work very well.

@depglass

I have one (didn't have a setting knob) and used it for Thanksgiving.  It dried out my beautiful moist turkey, but kept the gravy and stuffing warm.

If you get one, I would only put high moisture items on it.

Years ago (pre microwave), my husband had evening appointments and was often late getting home.  So I'd prepare dinner and leave his covered on a warning tray.  Worked very well.  If that were the case now, I'd just stick it in the microwave.  They do dry food out if it's not tightly covered.

@depglass  I used my neighbor's warming tray two years ago at a Christmas party. It kept things warm, but the food was gone rather rapidly and the plate got really warm, almost too hot. For Thanksgiving, I use slow cookers to keep things warm. If you have slow cookers that have a "warm" setting, you can keep things warm for hours without drying them out. I use it for mashed potatoes (up to 2 or 3 hours) and veggies.

I use mine for melting chocolate when I make candy and chocolae covered pretzels at Christmas..

I'm thinking of things like keeping bacon warm while I cook the rest of the Sunday breakfast.  Thanks, I'm going for it, its NIB.
