Maker's Mark! Yep, there are things better than rum for egg nog!

ROFL! I am sure but I do like rum in egg nog. Guess it is what I'm used to. I don't care for rum otherwise.

I DID buy some little Makers Mark sample set today. Perhaps I will encourage him to open it early....

We just discovered Kraken recently. It's really good in egg nog. We've even mixed in a little brandy for extra kick!

Kraken? That's rum?

I just bought some George Dickle for dh for Christmas today but it was too expensive to mix in eggnog.

(I couldn't think of the name.....I asked for George Dickleman....the woman thought I was nuts)

LOL, no such thing as George Dickleman, George Dickel is a nice Kentucky bourbon. Wouldn't mix it in eggnog however. I personally wouldn't mix bourbon in eggnog. Rum is used typically because of it's spices that adds flavor but also because it is lighter per say than a bourbon. Bourbon = corn mash and barley, rye, etc.. Rum =sugarcane and molasses. Thus, rum blending better with the eggs, sugar and milk.

Yes, Kraken is an extra dark spiced rum. Similar to Captain Morgan black spice.

Mt Gay rum has a black barrel rum (rum aged in 2 different bourbon barrels). It's really spectacular. They also have a normal spice rum as well. If you're looking for a more bourbon flavor that is a rum, I'd chose that one.

Well thank you Caitlin! That makes sense. I think the only rum I have ever tasted is Bacardi and I'm just not that into it. Maybe because it's all I've ever tasted. I do like it in eggnog.

Hahah on the Dickleman. I did get him the one(George Dickle) that is small batch $35.00 one. But we won't be putting it in eggnog!

Re: Which Rum is better for eggnog

I was just looking on the site drinksmixer dot com and they had a whole page of drinks using eggnog. Some are very interesting. Some mix whiskey and rum together. You can use cognac, cinnamon schnapps, kahlua, amaretto. Lots of choices.

Sounds like it's which liquor should you add your eggnog to. LOL! My parents always put Maker's Mark or other good quality whisky in their eggnog, but they were bourbon drinkers. I think it's more about personal taste and preference. I like rum in cooking and daiquiris, but am not a rum & cola girl. If I were putting rum in my eggnog I would use a nice spiced rum. I'm sure whatever you use people will enjoy their cup of "Christmas cheer".
