Re: When you bring home fresh veggies..

They go in the fridge. I wash them when I'm ready to cook them.

I don't wash them until I'm ready to cook them. Washing them speeds up the spoiling process!

Most fruits are picked and sold before they've completely ripened. Pears, especially. I have to keep mine on the counter for at least three days before they're edible. If you put them straight into the fridge you will retard the ripening process.  This may not be scientifically correct, but in my experience it is.

Well that makes sense. I do that with certain fruits but they all end up in the refrigerator. I do that every year with the cases of peaches we buy from Co. I have to put them on my dining room table to ripen.

Refrigeration retards aging, but it also reduces flavor. For best flavor, eat fruit at room temperature.

Re: When you bring home fresh veggies..

We buy our fruits & veggies mostly from Costco, and there are only the 2 of us.

To make our fruit last we bring it home and prep it for refrigeration.  We wash grapes and take them off the stems.  After draining, they go into a L&L.

Oranges & grapefruit get peeled and segmented and also go into a L&L.  We can eat fresh tasting fruits for several weeks and I find it easier to choose a bowl of fruit if it is ready to go.

I learned from this BB that if I store each sweet onion wrapped in a newspaper in a basket they last much longer.  It works great!

I'll be trying the scallion and celery tips....THANKS!!

Re: When you bring home fresh veggies..

I don't cook, except for special occasions and when I do buy fresh veggies, I buy them a day before I'm going to use them.  They only live in the crisper for a day or two.  I do buy a lot of fruit.  I put my oranges, tangerines, grapefruit in the crisper but I do wash and dry my apples and remove that little sticker before they go in the crisper.  I'm not a nervous nellie type, I used to buy bag salads and put those in the crisper but now I order 2-3 big salads a week from a local restaurant and that takes care of our salad fix for the week.

Crystaltree:  Which restaurant do you purchase your salads from and what salads do you buy?  TIA

Re: When you bring home fresh veggies..

My Grandmother who lived to the age of 94 until 2012 taught me back in the 80's to immediately put all veg. in a tight bowl wrapped in paper towel.  The paper towel would need to be changed out every couple of days due to soaking up the moisture from the veggies.

This dear lady also kept all her oil checks and any other $$ she received in the fridge to until she could get to the bank.  Safe from fire and robbers!!

@IamMrsG I would love to regrow scallions.  Do you just leave the cut off end bobbing in a cup of water or is there something special you need to do?

Thanks in advance for any help!

@momtochloe  Just put the bulb and root end into a shallow glass or vase (in an inch or so of water).  The intent is to keep the roots nourished.  If you keep them in the water for any length of time, though, change it frequently to keep the water sweet.

i'm going to try growing scallions - love them
