Re: When Was The Last Time You Used This?

I mash everything by hand, so I use mine every week.  When I was first married in 1980, I used my brand new mixer to make mashed potatoes.  Every time that I did, I ended up with potatoes that were the texture of paste/glue.  We did not enjoy them, so I stopped making mashed potatoes for a long time. My mother always used a mixer and made excellent mashed potatoes, so that was all I ever knew.  I eventually found a hand masher by accident and decided to try it.  I have never gone back to using a mixer for mashing anything.  I use the mixer for my cookie dough, though.

I have used something like that--but mostly use my hand mixer for mashed spuds or other softened tubers like that. Have the one like the photo from ECBG.

Its hard on my hands to use anymore, but I like the way it leaves bits of potatoe and not totally smooth. My fave is using a ricer--that makes wonderful mashed spuds.

I still have my grandmother's solid wood masher, which is well over 100 years old by now.  I also have my mother's which is metal and much more modern.  I never have to make tons of mashed potatoes so I use one of those which work just fine for me.

Used mine a couple nights ago to break up chicken sausage while browning for sausage kale lentil soup.

Shape and material a bit different as it was silicone and nylon and holes like waffle fries.

I use my masher to start mashing my potatoes and then change over to my Kitchenaid mixer to add in the buttermilk and butter.

I use my pastry cutter for making guacamole.

I have never used a mixer for mashed potatoes.   When I first started making them, though, I was never thrilled with the outcome. Switching from the "swirly" masher to the round one was a game changer.

Re: When Was The Last Time You Used This?

My Hand Mixer was dying a slow death so I kept one as a backup for mashed potatoes.  However, I mentioned on the other thread that I just bought a new hand mixed last year so I put this up somewhere (not sure where....LOL).

I watch a few home cooks on Facebook and I watched one of them using this type of masher for breaking up ground beef for chili.  I had never seen/heard of that before.
