What's a substitue for sour cream?

we hate the taste of sour cream. I found a cake that calls for 1 cup of sour cream, something else would do the job as well and not have that awful wang to it.

Re: What's a substitue for sour cream?

I personally can not tell if sour cream is used in cakes. Have you already tried it with sour cream and found that you can tell and do not like it or are you expecting to be able to tell? I do use greek yogurt as a substitute a lot for sour cream but I actually love sour cream especially in cakes because it adds a wonderful moistness and texture.

My mother used to make a chocolate cake when I was a child with sour cream and it really added a wonderful ""something"" to it that did NOT taste the same without it.

I would think that greek yogurt would be a good sub though.

No, haven't used it before, just going by the fact we hate the smell and it's in potato chips now too. Whenever, we accidently pick up a sour cream chip we gag and put it down or spit it out. When I go get Mexican food I holler "no sour cream". LOL Maybe, it's like that recipe for mayonnaise cake you can't taste it in the cake. I hope not. Making a lemonade cake I saw in the Paula Deen magazine. Looks delicious and calls for a ton of butter, eggs, sugar, etc.

It's got to be good ! LOL My weekend 'sin' this weekend.

Sharke, I really doubt you will "taste" the sour cream, it gives a texture and also the acidity in it causes the leavening agent in the cake to work correctly so it will rise...

If you like the tarteness of lemon and it IS a lemonade cake, chances are VERY good that you will never even recognize the sour cream "taste" in the cake..

I agree with this! I use it all of the time in place of sour cream.

stilltamn8r is right about this, but if you really wan't a sub, I think mayonnaise would work. I actually had a recipe at one point for a chocolate cake that called for mayo.

Heavens, are you equating that horrible powder flavoring they use on potato chips to real sour cream? HUGE difference. If your sour cream is very fresh it shouldn't have any smell at all. If its any kind of 'tang' you don't like then some greek yogurts have more of it than sour cream. And definitely don't use buttermilk which wouldn't have the correct consistency. I'd find another cake recipe to make.

Re: What's a substitue for sour cream?

I don't think I could eat sour cream if my life depended on it{#emotions_dlg.scared}, not just as a topping or in any way by itself. But I have used it in cakes and biscuits, and I can't taste it. I have also substituted plain yogurt for it in recipes, and I can't usually tell the difference in texture, taste, etc.
