Mousiegirl - you lucky soul - DRY HEAT. I moved here to Sou Cal in late 1960 for the dry heat - came from New Orleans and I suffered in that wet air. HORRIBLE. At any rate last 10 to 15 years has seen the dry heat leave us here and we now have humidity. It really bothers me. Yep, when my grandfather added a house to the well/pump at their home and auto added the seating all around it - well I remember when it happened - a great place to comfortably eat watermelon - up until then we just sat outside wherever = sure was nice. And of course other foods were also eaten there but the watermelon was a biggie - rarely was it ever eaten in the house and the entire family sat around that well pump together. Heavenly indeed - families just do not do things like that much this day and time. I still have my happy memories and they will remain with me forever..
I did NOT fix dinner other than food for the two little ones. Pointed out the roast in the Fridge to Davey - LOL - and he warmed some up. We were the only ones here at eating time - yeah!!
It was indeed miserable today.

I have been using leftovers since Friday, except for Sunday when we cooked a chicken in the smoker, but without the wood chips, and a macaroni salad, onion, mayo, Dijon, relish, and salt and pepper. I use the medium to large instead of the very small macaroni, and like it the best. Once, when I began to prepare this, I discovered that I only had the larger pasta so had to use it, and it makes a much creamier salad.
Last night, I made a spinach and Jarlsburg omelet with garlic, salt and pepper, and DH had french bread toast with it along with sliced tomatoes on the side, I skipped the toast.
Tonight will be panko and parmesan breading on chicken breasts flattened to even them, and arugula, tomato and herb salad on top, may add a bit of mozzarella on top of the chicken after cooked just to melt, DH loves cheese, and his cholesterol is so low that he can afford to eat as much as he wants.
I have been adding finishing touches to my Fall decor displays. For the past week, we have been having 90's plus weather, so best to stay inside during the middle of the day. Until the past week, it was very much Fall here, Indian summer, but it is supposed to cool down by Sunday to the 70's, we will see.

For several years now, White Squash, aka Summer Squash, has been very difficult to find where I am. Use to be everywhere - no more. I was told no one bought it so whomever stopped growing it. At any rate I found some yesterday in Mentone, not real big but of course I bought it. Came home and spent three hours frying it. LOL. Takes a long time to cook it but I sure love it. We all pigged out on it. Like many things out here, the disappearing act takes on food and critters I guess.
Mousiegirl, I swear by leftovers - yours have been just great!!!
Woke up tired - course I woke up FOUR times during the night - I just hate that but it seems to happen more and more.
Hope one and all have a great day - eat well everyone.

Baked my sister's birthday cake at 4am this morning. I also haven't been sleeping well although I'm normally up early like that. She wanted red velvet with cream cheese icing so that's what she got. Baked a cake and now at work. I feel like Supergirl today.
I haven't posted a lot because I've either been eating a sweet potato or pasta. I just seem to be really rushed lately after work and haven't prepped on Sunday except for my cucumber salad for lunch every day. I keep waiting for the hot weather here to break so I can really get going on chili or soups. I'm just not feeling it when it's still 90 degrees out.

@Winifred I wake up every two hours or so every night, sometimes to take the pups out, but still would even without having to do that. If I am lucky, I can fall back to sleep soon, but there were years when I would lose at least two hours of sleep every night, that has improved.
I am posting a picture of a white summer squash, and tell me if this is the squash you like. Squash is so easy to grow. I have grown zucchini in grow bags, also eggplant, and lots of tomato plants, and bush beans. I would thibnk you could grow some squash in a large pot or grow bag even in the drought, then you could pig out all summer, lol.

@Laura14 the cake sounds yummy! I have never eaten red velvet cake, but I have made cream cheese frosting, so I can imagine. ![]()
I may have mentioned that I bake a yam every three-four days for my pups, and I eat my share first, lol, love them, but I am the only family member who does, aside from the pups.
How do you make your cucumber salad?

@mousiegirl Very easy. I peel and cut up and deseed (I hate seeds!) four big cucumbers. Toss with olive oil and red wine vinegar and the normal Italian spices and you have cucumber salad!
Now my grandparents actually made a real salad because they added in tomatoes. I love tomato sauce. I can not stomach a raw tomato. It's not happening. I'm a disgrace to my home state of New Jersey I know.
But if you like tomatoes, cut them up and throw them in the bowl and you now have a real proper cucumber salad.

@Laura14 My DD is exactly the same with tomatoes.
I can take them or leave them usually, but this year I grew my own, as I have mentioned, and then I was popping them in my mouth every time I went into the garden.
DH loves them in his salad, but I usually only use mixed greens for a salad, unless I make a composed salad.
The only cucumber salad I have made is the Asian style, which I love, but I never think to do it very often. I love them naked also. ![]()
Last night, I chunked a tomato, added thinly sliced red onion, balsamic vinegar, parsley and salt/pepper and that was going to be it, but then decided I would toss it all with mixed greens.
