Re: What's Cooking in September- already?

Happy Tuesday Everyone...

The weekend was very, very low key.  No, we did not go out for our Anniversary Dinner...I was sick, Friday and Saturday after Chemo.

We did watch -3- really good movies since Thursday.  I put the movies names and told a little bit about the Plot. You can look under the "TV and Movies Thread" listed under Q's Menu.

Sunday, I did a little grocery with the hubby.  We did manage go have a late lunch and dinner "Subway".

Was going to try to go thru a closet or two and it just did not happen...There is always another day, right?

Woke up Monday and told the hubby, "I am making homemade meatballs and will make enough to put a stach into the freezer".  I really was making a "Stach"

for I had purchased, 5 lbs of ground beef and 1lb of ground sausage.

Everything in the mixture lookeds and smelled "Amazing" and it is still raw...Not even cooked yet.  So, I begin to line my large brownie pans with foil. I always "Bake" my meatballs, switched over to this method right after I got married 27 yrs ago.

So, I now have two large pans of meatballs now in the oven, the smell is "Momma Mia Good"!

I go to check on them...I yell to the "Hubby", "I need your help".  I want to drain some of this grease off from the pans.  I told him, "Hold this bowl right under the right corner".  I am, "Going to slightly tilt the pan and pour the grease into the bowl".  The first pan went without a hitch...Perfect!  The second pan...Everything was going good until my "hubby" ...When he started to move the bowl from under the pan some of the grease splashed down into the bottom of the oven.

And yes...You guessed it...Voom!!!!!   Grease Fire!

Hubby was in a panic...I was very calm.  I immediately turned the oven off.  I had my silcone oven mits on so I grabed the one pan put it onto the stove top.  I was able to then grab the second pan and move it to the cutting board...Without getting burned.  I then closed the oven door...And the flames died. The fire alarms were blearing and the heavy smoke was horrible...We had to open all the windows and patio doors.

Dear God...What an afternoon and evening.

I still had to finish cooking the meatballs.  I did it by placing them in my corning wear and finishing them in the microwave.  It worked.  They already had nice baked color to them... (prior the fire)...Just needed to be cooked 5 mins longer.

I was exhausted...

But, I still had the oven to deal with.  My "Hubby" actually took one of his tools "Chisel" and got the heavy "Gunk" off from the bottom of the oven. I then poured "Dawn Dish Liquid" on the entire bottom and placed a very wet dish rag over the entire bottom of the oven.  I hoped this would help...Please!

I slept until 11:00 this morning!  This never happens.  I was that wipped out.

Checked on the oven and "Dawn", broke down 95% of the "Gunk".  It is still sitting and I will have to tackle it later today.

So, ladies that about sums up my "Holiday Weekend"! Yesterday, was indeed a "LABOR DAY"!

Dinner tonight will be NY Steaks on the grill and a salad. That was planned for yesterday but that just was not going to happen...

Do "All" of you remember that old TV commercial..."Calgone"...Take me away...

Boy, did I ever need to be taken away yesterday.

Have a good rest of your day.  Look on the bright side...It is already Tuesday afternoon. Smiley Happy

Re: What's Cooking in September- already?

Are there still some schools which start after Labor Day? We have not done that in Ca for many many years - they just keep starting earlier and earlier and during the hottest time of the year. Interesting in that we came to Ca when my daughter was in the 2nd grade - there was NO AC in any schools and they survived just fine. Started after Labor day. Schools in my area start the second week of August - really hot and of course AC is now every where. Kids could not survive without it these days since they start so darn early. Stupid in my opinion.

Did not prepare dinner - actually did not expect many here - boy was I fooled = all were here but they were told to find their own food. Plenty of that here but no way was I going to cook with little or no notice. LOL.

Hope all had a super good day.

Re: What's Cooking in September- already?

Morning, thinking ribeyes on the grill, still hot/humid here so don't want to heat up the house.

@Winifred school here in Chicago starts the day after Labor Day, as has been for years, I too think the Aug starts are not good.

I'm happy to hear you let "them" fend for themselves, good for you!

@Bellabutterfly sorry to hear about the meatballs, you managed it very well, I would have been hysterical.  Hoping you feel better soon & sending prayers your way for your recovery, please take care.

Nothing much going on here today, should clean the house, so we'll see what happens

Stay well & have a good day

@Preds as usual your posts brighten my day

@mousiegirl your menu's always make me drool, cooking up a storm every day

@GATORGIRL great sign, loved it

@spix  Actually, I cook pretty simply now, whereas when I was young, I always seemed to be in a cooking marathon, lol, but I loved it.  Now that I live in the garden, by dinnertime, I want easy and quick.  I think DH longs for those days as I cooked some spectacular meals. Smiley Happy

@mousiegirl by what you cook now, I bet they were extra spectacular, but it happens to the best of us, I always loved to cook mostly for a group not just me

Re: What's Cooking in September- already?

Last night were baked chicken thighs, bones in and with skins, covered in extra virgin olive oil with fresh lemon juice, dried oregano and basil, and salt and pepper.  They came out so juicy and tender with crispy skin.  I usually try to cook these too fast, forget to get them into the oven on time, and it never works, so I cooked them at 325 degrees for close to an hour, fresh picked yellow beans, and what else but a huge sliced tomato with the drizzle that I use.

Re: What's Cooking in September- already?

Last night we had orange chicken, broccoli with cheese sauce and Fries - pretty darn good if I say so.

Got a tad warm today = I am very tired =  what else is new? Got three loads of clothes washed and tomorrow will probably have some more to do. what am I saying? Not probably, the correct statement is I WILL have some more to do. Does it ever end.

HAVE A GOOD DAY TOMORROW!!
