What's Cooking in October 2017 - trying to get month correct

We had a couple replies in this thread - I thought I had corrected the month yet it continues to show up as September. Open the thread and it says October say am starting anew. Before I finish with this I will probably have it royally messed up. Sigh

Had Jack in the Box last night for Ricky and Davey - Saturday night was pork steak in the slow cooker. Tonight? Not real sure - Fried Cabbage with cornbread sounds good to me. Yes indeed it does.

Hope we can now get some people here for October Cooking.

Hi @Winifred and all-----

beautiful fall weather with chilly nights.....I love it !

Firewood split and stacked, mums, pumpkins and corn husks decorating the outside of the house and all is right with the world.

All the winter squashes are on sale everywhere for .99/ lb so I picked up spaghetti, acorn and butternut. I have an oven roaster chicken roasting in the oven with potatoes, carrots, onions and fennel and the acorn squash....

a real fall feast and the best, for me, is plenty of leftovers. I picked up a dozen donuts at Dunkin' this morning and ,when the chicken comes out of the oven, a doughnut bread pudding will go in to be eaten with whipped heavy cream. I wish it was all ready NOW !

We are celebrating our teacher daughters birthday today; our meal was turkey, gravy, rice pilaf, green beans, rolls, and chocolate cake.   I'm not a fan of rice pilaf, so I had a sweet potato instead.   Trucker daughter got in at 4 a.m., so we were all together.

Re: What's Cooking in October 2017 - trying to get month correct

I made split pea soup in the slow cooker yesterday, so easy, and so good.  In my attempt to clean out the freezer this month, I found a ham hock, bought the split peas, carrots and potatoes, and had everything else.

I made croutons from English Muffins, delicious.  These little muffins are so versatile.  I have made French toast, perfect as they become crunchy, and have the little pockets to hold the syrup,  used them as hamburger buns, grilled cheese, and of course open faced sandwiches, such as tuna melts, now croutons.

Tonight will probably be potstickers and cabbage, have to get rid of those potstickers, lol,  so I can buy more of the kind I like, which is pork, these are vege, okay, but not as good as the pork.

We have having Fall weather this week, wonderful, but not so conducive to ripening tomatoes and peppers.

Re: What's Cooking in October 2017 - trying to get month correct

Preds, had to chuckle as that sure looks like Miss Blackie, my old black cat peeking out amongst the orange and yellow.  LOL. Have a lot of left over food in the Fridge AND tomorrow is garbage pick up day. So I guess that means we need to eat what is in the Fridge - I will be more than happy as there is some left over fried cabbage. Love that stuff. Lots of other good stuff also but if not each pretty soon it has to be tossed. the pork steak was fixed either Sunday or Monday night so it must be finished up.

Nice day today - and I kept busy. Ricky had his session at the County Mental Health facility and did pretty darn well - he was soooooooooooo well behaved yesterday. Then had to run two other errands and he went with me - was a bit nervous about one but he did very well. Thank you Lord.

Need to get a move on - hope one and all had a super great day

Re: What's Cooking in October 2017 - trying to get month correct

I used a lot of creativity last night - the remaining frozen dinners. Tonight I hope to be able to find time - yeah, sure - to fix a roast in the slow cooker. Only have two left in the freezer - that is unreal for me. Need to get down to Foods 4 Less and buy a couple more family packages of them as they are on sale for $2.47 a pound - boneless. Their meats are excellent. Freezer and cupboards are really not jammed as they usually are - been a tough couple months but hope to get a few things put back again - am use to that way  of life.

Had to take the car in to Toyota yesterday afternoon. Dash maintenance light came - it  was just a regular check up but you never know and those warnings are lifesavers and have been a couple times thru the years. Only needed tire rotation, oil filter, wiper blades  and of course oil change. I got off lucky - last couple trips it was brakes and that is always pricey.

Hope one and all have a great day - we are looking forward to a real hot one - right night I am freezing. Sigh.
