What is going on with onions?

Something has changed. They now make my eyes water, this is new for me. I put some leftover chopped onions in a lock & lock and stored in the frig. The smell goes right through the lock and lock, and permeated the entire frig. I threw them out. These are called Panache Sweet. Are they kidding?

WOW I got some this weekend that REALLY made my eyes tear up. Usually they don't. They were organic onions to, but they are strong!

Re: What is going on with onions?

There are other factors, of course, but the environment in which they are grown plays a large role. A lot of the pungency of onions is determined by the weather--heat and amount of watering. High temperatures and low watering increases the acid that makes an onion seem 'strong.'

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.

I thought it was only me that felt this way. This is the second year that Vidalia onions made my eyes tear and also were exceptionally strong. As far as placing them in a container and storing them in the fridge I gave up. They get even stronger when stored in the fridge.

That happened to me too last week. I like to slice red onions for my salad and this is the first time they made me cry. They were very strong in taste and had a much deeper color to them too.

Re: What is going on with onions?

I've almost always had tears and smells. Once I cut an onion, I wrap the rest of it in a paper towel BEFORE I put it into whatever will protect the rest of the contents of my refrig from the smell. Sometimes I do use a plastic, but my preference is to put that wrapped piece into an empty jar and screw the lid on tightly.

I especially hate it when my butter absorbs the onion and that's in spite of the fact that I think nothing smells much better than onions sautéing in butter!

Re: What is going on with onions?

I bought Vidalias all summer and have had no.problems: they are my favorite onion, and it's just not a meal unless onions and garlic are involved! One thing I have read-I don't know if this is true- but when you cut the onion, leave the root end intact-I don't know why that would work, but allegedly it keeps the irritating gas in check. It's rare that I have leftover onion, but sometimes I do. I bought this "onionkeeper" in the produce section. It's made to look like an onion, but it has this ridge that the leftover onion sits on, so if there are any juices or sugars that ooze, the vegetable isn't sitting in them. I have not had any problems with odors in my fridge. Poodlepet

Count me in....onions haven't bothered me for a long time, but the one I chopped this weekend made my eyes tear like crazy. It was only then that I realized I haven't experienced that for several years.

Re: What is going on with onions?

I've been telling DH for weeks I can't stand the smell of onions as they are so strong. I have never liked the smell but now they are repulsive. Thought it was just me.
