Re: What is going on with onions?

I also have noticed that the smell escapes into the refrigerator, no matter what I try to seal it in. L&L have failed me on the onions. Don't know what's going on. So strong in odor now.

Re: What is going on with onions?

I usually buy whatever kind of "sweet" onions they have (Vidalia if they're in season). If I cut one and don't use it all, I just put it in a plastic ziploc sandwich or storage bag and it keeps fine in the fridge for quite a while with no odor at all. I haven't had a problem with them seeming stronger than usual.

Re: What is going on with onions?

Onions made my eyes water when I was a young child, but haven't bothered my eyes in years now. If I don't chop a whole onion, I store the rest in a ziplock baggy in the fridge. The smell never permeates the bag.

Re: What is going on with onions?

I have mine shipped in from Ga. in May from Morris Farms. Only Vidalia's for me. I buy like 20lbs at a time, and store in crisper and believe it or not they keep till the next time I order them. I'm a onion lover and those store bought things are for the birds. They are so strong they will put hair on your chest. ROFL Sometimes you can buy Vidalia (has to say 'grown in Georgia) at Sam's Club, not quite as good as the fancy ones, but, will do in a pinch , just soak in water to get the acid out.

I wear plastic gloves when cutting up onions, no onion smell on my hands. {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

Re: What is going on with onions?

My eyes always burn & tear when cutting onions. Anytime DH goes in the kitchen to cook I like to leave the area when he cuts onions. Does not matter if I leave the area or not when I come back up through the kitchen my eyes also start burning & tearing. My eyes will burn the rest of the day.

Re: What is going on with onions?

Hmm aren't onions supposed to make your eyes tear up? To me its a sign that its fresh. I surely wouldn't throw it away because it smells too potent. I LOVE onions. I just bought a bag of fresh, stinky, onions at my local farm market this past weekend!
