For me, it's hot water cornbread and pinto beans (I've had pinto beans, just not the cornbread). For those from the south, you will know what hot water cornbread is. When I was growing up, my grandmother would fix hot water cornbread and pinto beans (she shaped her cornbread into oval relatively thick patties before frying). After it was done, I would cut the top off the cornbread, then dig out the soft middle and mash that up with pinto beans. Then I would fill the shell of the cornbread back up with that mixture. Ohhhhh sooooo good! I've tried and tried, but I just can't make hot water cornbread that tastes like my grandmother's!
