Re: What do you keep on hand for guests

No one I know comes for a meal UNLESS they are invited for a meal. If someone does stop by, it is usually just for a few minutes so no food/snacks necessary. Something to drink is always offered and if we happen to be having a snack, that is also offered. We never drop in on anyone either. I just don't think it is done anymore.

A big smile and a welcome, "come on in".

We live in a very friendly neighborhood and nobody thinks anything of dropping by. If somebody's out for a walk, they'll stop in "just because". Often somebody will see us out working in the garden or in the flowerbeds and they'll come over for a quick chat. I always bring something out, maybe a soda or a beer and we'll all take a break...sit down for about 15 minutes or so and chat. If somebody sees us sitting on the front porch, they'll stop in for a quick visit.

And people do visit us, especially at this time of the year. They'll see our lights on, and so they'll stop in. I always have cheese and crackers, maybe a bottle of wine. I always have cookies or something to for us enjoy. Some people call ahead of time, but again, if somebody decides to just "stop in" well, that's fine, too. I really don't have a problem with it.

I've never thought it was weird and I would never tell them they are not welcome. If it is old-fashioned, I'm really glad I'm old-fashioned.
