Cheese and crackers.

We always have a variety of each on hand. Trader Joe's has wonderful, affordable cheese and good crackers.

I also always have fruit on hand to put on a cheese board along with the cheese and crackers.

I just want to preface this with the notion that I really do MEAN it. If there's one thing about me, aside from all the crazy (ha!), is that I always mean what I say and I say what I mean. So, anyway -

Noel - You are one of the nicest people I know. Here's why I say that - you are nice because you are nice. You aren't just nice to try and prove to others that you are nice. You are a good person and one of the people here who I always look forward to seeing.

CB, I am honored. I can't tell you how much that means to me, and honestly, I can say that I feel the same about you {#emotions_dlg.wub}

I like you so much as a person and I love to read your posts. I also know that even if you and I disagree on something, there's no likelihood that you would ever say anything hurtful to me. What that translates to is trust Smile

Re: What do you keep on hand for guests

Around the holidays, we always have a whole smoked ham with the bone on in the fridge. If guests drop by with or without letting us know, we always cut the ham for sandwitches. We serve it with a cheese tray, olives, pickles pickled peppers and assorted mustards.

There is always homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, wine, beer and soda along with potato chips, pretzels and dips.

We usually have pig in the blanket (ground meat wrapped with cabbage leaves) in the fridge too. I can just heat it up and make mashed potatoes for a quick meal.

My guests never come to eat, they come to visit, but being Italian, we prepare food and expect them to partake. It's a culture thing. Mangiare!

Re: What do you keep on hand for guests

Thanks, Noel! You are right - I would never do that. Nobody agrees with every single thing with anybody and it's what is in the heart that matters to me. I don't trust humans much, for good reason, and I seldom have my heart on my sleeve. I also didn't want to make a big deal of it but suddenly I just had to say that to you because it was, at that moment, coming out of my heart.

Now, I shall go back to being impermeable. ha! Seems like growing up having to be tough to survive stays with a person. Smiley Happy xoxo

Okay thanks everyone...I get the idea is to keep it simple ...no special things to keep on hand and hope they come more for the visit than the good food.

Re: What do you keep on hand for guests

I live out in the middle of NO PLACE.......and I mean just that.....A great deal of the time my road is impassable, except with a 4 wheel drive, that I do have.....No one else lives on my sandy road......My dad is my only family, and most of the time, he will not travel 2 miles to my house.......SO.....there must be a specific reason that you would show up at my door........{#emotions_dlg.sneaky} I always have coffee on hand with my Keurig, and there is always cheese and fruits at my house, so I can always come up with something........But, you better call and ask if you can EVEN GET to my house..........Wink

Re: What do you keep on hand for guests

I always make a point of letting friends know that I rarely answer my door unless I am expecting someone. But as a frequent Trader Joes shopper, I always have a variety of cheese, crackers, appetizers. sweets, and wine on hand in the event they catch me on a day that I do answer the door!

We don't know anyone who would drop in unannounced, thank goodness.

Re: What do you keep on hand for guests

When I was a kid many, many years ago we frequently had drop in guests. Parents never thought twice about it. My Mom would put on the coffee and usually had cookies for them. One of my uncles always wanted "Coffee Royale" made w/ Seagrams 7. She kept a bottle just for him. These are pleasant memories for me.
