I'm talking about the nationwide recall at several chains. Were these eggs not boiled correctly or what? If I boil some eggs, will I have the same problem? I'm mystified.

@depglass. Unless you can find the answer online somewhere, you probably need to ask a microbiologist.

Listeria is found in soil and water and finds its way to animals and humans usually because sanitization techniques aren't followed. The hard boiled eggs in question were infected after they were boiled. In your home Listeria can be killed at temperatures above 165 F. Raw eggs are more likely to carry Salmonella strain, which is also killed by cooking/boiling.
Some people are more easily infected than others. Some OB docs warn pregnant women to stay away from processed meats because of harm to the fetus from an infected mom.
It's been many years since I taught microbiology, so I need to do some reading! Bottom line, boiling your own eggs is the way to go.

@Katcat1: from CBS News
A recall of hard-boiled eggs and egg salads linked to a deadly listeria outbreak has been expanded to include major retailers including Walmart, Trader Joe's, Kroger, Costco and ShopRite. The widened recall includes popular brands and organic fare such as Egglands Best, Pete & Gerry's and Vital Farms.
Georgia processor Almark Foods earlier in the week expanded a recall to include all hard-boiled egg products from a facility in Gainesville, with Dierbergs Markets, Reichel Foods and two other companies so far issuing recalls as a result.
Great American Deli recalled egg salad sandwiches sold at convenience stores and vending machines in the following states: Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

@Ruby Laine I totally agree with you - make your own hb eggs, I do, never a problem.
I also do not buy romaine lettuce ever since all that turned bad. What I don't understand is why I keep seeing it everywhere in grocery stores and restaurants. I don't order a salad without asking if it contains romaine. Most times, I pass on a salad out anyway.
I also do not eat red meat ie burgers. Beef/grnd beef has gone bad too.
I never eat out at a buffet of any type. And I pick and choose carefully where I may eat out at.
Processed meats ie lunch meats are just plain bad for us anyway. I cringe to think about all those sandwiches my own parents ate all their lives.
It's become so dangerous for us to eat out, eat anything anywhere.
