What bowls do you use for French Onion soup?

Given that you generally broil/melt the cheese that tops French Onion soup, what oven safe bowls do you use? Do you have any favorites or recommendations?

Thanks for any thoughts.

i have some big, deep mugs, that i use. i put in extra large croutons and a scoop of mozzarella cheese and then ladle on the soup. the hot soup melts cheese and is much easier to handle than large chunk of bread w/ cheese.

Thanks, 10sluvr. Well, maybe that is what I should do...just put the cheese in the bottom. Then I wouldn't have to worry about an oven proof bowl. Typically, I put a piece of bread on the bottom, then soup, and then sliced cheese all over the top.

I'll tell you my secret. I don't melt the cap of cheese on the bowl. I make a huge crouton of garlic and olive oil brushed French bread that I toast in the oven. Then I grate a mix of gruyere and parmesan or fontina or even asiago on the crouton and heat it again or broil it on a foil-lined cookie sheet before I'm ready to serve the soup.

I put the soup into a regular soup bowl and drop in the crouton before serving. It's less cheesy and gloppy, less calories and has all the flavor.

I like your idea, Campion. Sounds really great, and as you said, less messy. You don't have to worry about any cheese sticking to any bowls that way. Smile

Thank you Campion, sunshine45 and northernlights for your replies. I don't make French onion soup very often as my hubby is not the biggest fan. But, I LOVE it! And it's really pretty easy to make except for slicing all those darn onions. And uh, truth be told, I think my favorite part of the soup is the gooey cheese. ha!

Thanks again.
