@ThinkingOutLoud wrote:Red Velvet - ick!
Don't like the taste or the idea of eating the food coloring.
@ThinkingOutLoud one Christmas a friend gave me some homemade Red Velvet cookies that I decided to try before I brushed my teeth.
I spit into the sink and my first thought was OMG, I'll be toothless before bedtime, then I remembered the cookies!

Fruit Cocktail Cake
Any cake with gobs of icing! I buy plain cupcakes and scrap off the icing!
Never been a big sweets eater!

I was afraid that I was going to be the only one! I love chocolate but the coconut in German chocolate cake just ruins it for me. And I agree that extends to "any other cake with coconut anywhere in sight" (or not in sight, but in the ingredients).
But I love coconut scented cosmetics, lotions, etc. Go figure.
Edited to add: Now that I've read the whole thread, I see there are several of us. Now I don't feel so odd for hating German chocolate cake ha ha.

@wagirl I'm gonna help you out! Make a pineapple upside down cake but use peach halves instead of pineapple! Now THAT is good.
I did that when I was in jr. high school (we didn't have pineapple) and my dad kept raving about it. Finally he said "How did you get the pineapple that tender? ![]()

@Citrine1, your post made me smile.
About hummingbird cake, it's not that it's awful, but to me, it just dosen't fit its name at all. In reality, it's kind of a cross between a carrot cake and a spice cake.
So, why call it hummingbird cake?
I loved Emily Dickenson's poem 'A Route of Evanescence' about hummingbirds.
What a word evanescence is! Meaning "the quality of being fleeting or vanishing quickly, impermanence".
So, a quasi spice cake just doesn't cut it! ![]()
Maybe I imagined it to be more like a really special pavlova?

@sabatini Yes, I gathered from reading the ingredient list, that it was something like a spice/carrot cake. Your description was perfect. Since I like both spice and carrot cakes, maybe I should go ahead and try it afterall! Haha
I think (if I knew nothing about this cake) I would imagine it to be something light and delicate because of the name.
I'm also an Emily Dickinson fan. My favorite of hers is The Chariot, sometimes called Because I Could Not Stop For Death. At the other end of the spectrum from A Route of Evanescence!

I don't like spice cake, German Chocolate or any cake soaked with rum.

Oooh, @Citrine1, the Chariot is a good one! So nice to meet you!
My mother tried to instill a love of poetry is us, & always gave volumes of poetry as gifts for any special occasion, steadfast in the hope that someone out there might enjoy it too.
She was forever quoting poetry, & I was happy to listen.
Many years ago, I moved back to New England after 20 years in California, & hadn't seen a glorious fall in as many years.
One day, I had to pull my car over, as I was sobbing, and thought I'd burst at the sheer magnificence of it.
All I could think of was Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem, "God's World"
God’s World, Edna St. Vincent Millay
O world, I cannot hold thee close enough!
Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!
Thy mists, that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag
And all but cry with colour!
...
World, World, I cannot get thee close enough!
Long have I known a glory in it all,
But never knew I this;
Here such a passion is
As stretcheth me apart,—Lord, I do fear
Thou’st made the world too beautiful this year;
My soul is all but out of me,...
Sorry to briefly derail this thread, @ECBG !

Nice to meet you as well @sabatini!
Isn't that a beautiful poem? (this is the first I've heard of it). I didn't realize you live in New England. My dream area! I've visited the New England states, but that was many, many years ago and I still fantasize and romanticize about it. Martha's Vineyard calls to me!
Autumn is my favorite season and I simply cannot imagine life without it. I would not fare well in California.
I've been a lover of poetry my entire life, starting at a young age when my grandmother bought me "A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson.
I envy that you received volumes of poetry as gifts. What a treasure!
