When you look back over 5 years has your diet changed much? When I look at many recipes now it shocks me when I think about how much fat we have cut from our diets--especially since the virus years at home and in restaurants so much.
And I thought we were eating well and test numbers weren't bad.
We use very little if any mayonnaise or butter, basically no cream cheese, cheese, or full fat milk now (except yogurt sometimes). We have bought cream cheese the last two Christmas holidays and not used it. It got tossed. Cheese? Maybe a tiny sprinkle on a salad or veggie lasagna.
We have gradually made a lot of changes in the last 10 years, and tastes have changed too. We gravitate toward veggies and whole grains now so much more than in previous years. Lean beef or pork once a week, chicken maybe twice, salmon, tuna or sardines (for me!) twice.
I am surprised at what has changed for us.

Well in my case at least, my diet had to change and it started in 2020 during the pandemic when I had my second right knee replacement. I mentioned on this forum about having a repeat right knee replacement because of a staff infection after the first knee replacement in September of 2019. Being a type 2 diabetic my eating habits were out of control so after going thru a huge ordeal and having the repeat replacement I made a big change in my diet. I lost 40lbs, down to a size xs or small, off diabetes meds and blood pressure meds, all I take is a multivitamin and a cholesterol pill. My A1C is 5.8. I mainly eat baked fish or chicken, veggies, low carb, no pork and I love the no sugar company keto chocolate. I feel so much better !! I actually surprised myself !!

For DH and me our diets have remained the same. No real reason for us to change.

I'm not a nutritionist, but there are healthy fats and bad ones. I stick to the healthy ones, and shun the other.
More important for me is to go very low over processed sugars.
Haven't really changed my diet much or how I cook (when I cook).

I've gone almost totally sugar and carb free with heavy emphasis on unsaturated fat along with intermittent fasting.

We did the opposite of you @Sooner. In June 2019, we eliminated sugar, refined carbs and grains, kept our protein moderate, and increased our healthy fat consumption. I keep a 20:4 intermittent fasting schedule most of the time. I've lost 150 lbs. and reversed pre diabetes in the process.

@JeanLouiseFinch Good for you! Whatever works best for each of us--and doing anything requires effort and work. For me what you did would be extremely difficult--don't know if I could.
We're doing what is the Mediterranean diet I guess, although we have been going in that direction for many years before it was called that.
We do almost all whole grains, far less sugar, and mostly simple food from scratch with less meat and lots more vegetables. Oddly, it hasn't been as difficult as I would have guessed. We have always been lower carb and fat than was the norm, as was my mom's cooking when I was growing up.
And we've never been big on lots of cheese--which seems to be a mainstay for a lot of people and restaurants! ![]()

@Harpa We're big on EVOO and Avocado oil. I think my husband uses canola oil for stir fry--we seem to always have a small bottle--but he uses very little oil for that. I eat salads now mostly with a good vinegar only.

We have changed where we eat more than what we eat. We do not eat out often and eat very little prepared/packaged foods. Off the top of my head, pizza is the one prepared item we eat the most often. We eat the indvidual size pizza and add a few toppings. Total calorie for one at the most would be 500 calories.
I prepare most meals from scratch. I primarily use olive oil, but sometimes I use canola for frying halibut. We also do eat and enjoy dairy produts, from cheese to butter to ice cream. We eat lots of veggies and fruits.
Neither my husband and I are overweight.
I personally don't think there is one right way to eat healthy. I do think our bodies tell us what works for us ... we just need to listen.
