I just read that on this day (August 24) in 1869 the waffle iron was patented by Cornelius Swartwout of New York. I was surprised it was that early!
When I was growing up, we had breakfast for dinner once a week. One of my favorites was my mom's bacon waffles. She would make the batter and lay bacon strips on top so they baked in. So good!
Mom gave me a waffle iron when I first married. I haven't used it in a long time, but I know right where it is! Maybe I'll make DH some waffles in a week or two. ![]()

Waffles were always a major foodc group when I was growing up because dad loved them so much. Mom made a big batch every week and he'd freeze a good portion of them to eat reheated in the toaster until the next new batch. We liked them with chopped pecans in the batter best.
I have the old waffle iron but never use it.

I remember my Mom had a waffle iron she got with green stamps. Remember when supermarkets gave those out?
She was thrilled with the thing and we enjoyed the waffles. They were delicious. I have no desire to own one or make my own waffles. I am much too lazy. I will use frozen waffles or order them in a restaurant.

Hi @beach-mom , it sounds like a wonderful memory. I'm curious and may like to try your recipe. Did your mom cook the bacon before putting in the waffle batter? It seems like it wouldn't cook if put in raw.
I have the kids over for breakfast every once in awhile and they love bacon and waffles so this may be a good recipe to try.

(bolded by me) That's a cool way to do it and I never thought of that with the bacon. I would just cook bacon, break it all up, and add it into the batter. I also am a cheese nut so I'd shred cheese (probably one of my favs - extra sharp cheddar. Tillamook is the best!) and put that in the batter.
Needless to say I don't care for syrup and I would make a waffle for lunch or dinner with the bacon and cheese and just eat it like a piece of bread. ![]()
I haven't made them in ages, but it sounds good now. I still have my Belgian waffle iron.

@cjm61 - She laid the strips in raw! She made her own batter, and I think they just got pushed down into the batter. They were definitely cooked into the waffle. I've always been fussy about my bacon, however I eat it. I like it well cooked, but not to the point it crumbles. ![]()

Have any of you encountered the new fad of eating chicken and waffles? We have a fast food restaurant with that as their speciality. That combo baffles me. I like waffles, I like chicken, but together no thanks. I can't figure out how they're served.

I had a waffle today - tried the new Chick-fil-A waffle chicken bacon sandwich.
Just came out today. Ate part of it because couldn't afford all those calories.
It was interesting

@Sooner @rockygems123. Was the chicken in pieces like a leg or wing or was it sliced?
