I am watching and waiting for watermelon to ripen and re-enter my life!  How I love that sweet, wonderful, perfect nectar of life.  Hurry watermelon, come to me, I'm waiting.... Smiley Tongue   Heart

Could you please tell me how to pick a ripe one? I usually think the heaviest one is the juicy one but last week got a mini one & it was awful. Also maybe because it was the 1st of the season.

Seems like the stores pretty much have them year around nowadays.

Anyone else eat theirs sprinkled with salt and pepper?  I grew up eating it that way.

We would put salt on watermelon if it was not really sweet.  Never tried pepper but it is supposed to enhance the flavor!

We have watermelon available in the Produce dept.  I get the bowls of already cut melon since it is just me.

I bought a mini watermelon last week.  Our local ones aren’t even planted yet, so it will be about July before I can get those.

The  one I bought was very good...small and seedless. I like the yellow seedless ones that I buy from a local farmer best.  They really are sweet and I have never had a bad one.

My mother used to put salt on watermelon and pepper on cantaloupe.  I do neither.

Remember, it isn't watermelon season yet, so any you buy in the shops have come from a far distance and picked underripe then shipped and maybe chemically ripened. To tell if it is ripe, the watermelon should have a hollow sound when tapped or thumped. The belly of the melon, where it was on the ground, should be yellowish in color versus white. Yellowish is ripe. Weight is an indicator of size and water content, but not always ripe. You could also let it sit for a day or two and watch it to ripen, but the best are bought in season as with any fruit or veg. I find the ones this time of year or in the boxes underripe and need of salt to sweeten.

I was sooooo anxious for that sweet, satisfying taste that I bought one of the small (personal size) ones at my Kroger last week.  They had them for 68 cents each.  Then I found out why.  Not good at all, I threw it away after the 2nd bite.  I should have known it was too early in the season, but like the OP mentioned, I was so excited for that  highlight fruit of the upcoming season!!
